I You Know You Want is a story about RAPE which is something none of us want to go through. But in this day and age it happens more times than not. As Charlie gets older and begins to date the more afraid I become because men are punished a lot of time for doing nothing and men just like women can be raped.
I choose to read the Stoy because of the Rape aspect and being able to discuss what happened with my family. I liked the main characters healing journey of therapy, and learning to lean on her friends. Although her friends didn’t always know what to say or do which makes it harder on the victim.
The beginning of I You Know You Want has so many pop culture references, which began to drive me up the wall because It felt like the author was trying a little too hard. In the first chapters, there’s also, a lot of the main character talking about her friends’ beauty and comparing herself, which s normal for girls, but it felt a little over-the-top, and it definitely got old quickly.
You need to be prepared because there is a graphic rape scene in Chapter 5, that sets this whole book in motion. For me personally this scene is difficult to read, and it made me sad but also, so angry. It also made me wonder how my sister felt because she had been raped in the past by all people my brother and a cousin.
This scene in the book made me angry because this happens too often and also because the guy in the story tried to justify the rape. Which so many people do in ‘real life’. From past experiences I knew that if Catie decided to report the rape, she would be asked so many stupid questions like ‘what were you wearing’, ‘had you been drinking’, ‘but did you actually say no’. It’s infuriating that this is the world we live in people who have dealt with rape have to deal with this.
I love how I You Know You Want doesn’t end with Catie finding a guy that makes her feel like she can love herself again, and deserves love. I You Know You Want Catie learns how to love herself, which is an important lesson we all need to learn. Catie learns how to love herself, which is such an important lesson.
About the book:
After meeting a handsome stranger, Caitlin’s seemingly-perfect life turns upside down after a vicious sexual assault. You Know You Want It delves not only into the destructive consequences sexual assault leaves on the victims, but also examines the harsh reality of rape culture and victim-blaming almost all survivors are subjected to.
