What’s Coming to the Carter
The Perilous Texas Adventures of Mark Dion opens February 8 with an Artist Talk at 1 p.m.

Educator Workshop: Contemporary Installation, 5:30–7:30 p.m.
Experience Puente Nuevo, an immersive environment by contemporary artist Justin Favela, and discover ways of working with students to draw on cultural influences and create unexpected installations. Meet Carter Community Artist Raul Rodriguez, receive resources for your classroom, and earn CPE hours.

Toddler Studio: Feathered Friends, 10 a.m.–noon
Join us as we learn about birds! Toddlers and grown-ups will explore feathered friends in the exhibition Eliot Porter’s Birds and then create an art project, read bird books, and learn how science and art play together.
Tickets are $10 per child, free for Carter members. Accompanying adults are free (max two adults per child; no older siblings).
Exhibition Talk: Flights of Fancy
Birds of a feather flock together, which is why we are combining beer flights and a talk about birds! Starting at 2 p.m., taste the varied concoctions made by a HopFusion Ale Works before learning about the Gentling brothers and the new installation of their work. At 3 p.m., Janelle Montgomery, Gentling Curatorial Assistant, will discuss Scott and Stuart’s compositional strategies in their artwork. Spencer Wigmore, Assistant Curator of Paintings, Sculpture, and Works on Paper, will discuss the process of researching and creating multiple exhibitions of their work. Both speakers share the stage after their talks for a short discussion and Q&A.

Artist Talk: Mark Dion, 1–3 p.m.
One of the most well-regarded living artists today, Dion is part explorer and part historian; part naturalist and part collector of curiosities.
In the last two years, in preparation for the exhibition The Perilous Texas Adventures of Mark Dion, Dion retraced the footsteps of several nineteenth-century explorers in Texas, collecting materials to form a site-specific exhibition that you have to see to believe. Hear him discuss the process of creating his large-scale installations and how they address today’s culture head-on with intellect and humor.
Dion is an internationally acclaimed artist whose work examines the ways in which dominant ideologies and public institutions shape our understanding of history, knowledge, and the natural world.
He has received numerous awards, including the ninth annual Larry Aldrich Foundation Award (2001), The Joan Mitchell Foundation Award (2007), and the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Lucida Art Award (2008). He has had major exhibitions at the Miami Art Museum (2006); Museum of Modern Art, New York (2004); Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, Ridgefield, Connecticut (2003); Tate Gallery, London (1999); and the British Museum of Natural History in London (2007). Dion is also the co-director of Mildred’s Lane, an innovative visual art education and residency program in Beach Lake, Pennsylvania.

Girl Scouts: Digital Photographer and Book Artist Workshop, 1–4 p.m.
Explore special exhibitions at the Carter and learn how artists use photography to tell a story. Juniors will experiment with digital photography, and Cadettes will create their own artist books. Learn art-making skills and processes from inspiring local artists.
Juniors and Cadettes will have the opportunity to complete all steps required for their Digital Photographer or Book Artist badge. All participants will receive a Carter fun patch.
Tickets are $8 per Girl Scout; accompanying adults do not need to register. Register at Girl Scouts USA; registration closes January 31.
