What a Wonderful Word: A Collection of Untranslatables from Around the World

Children's Book Reviews

I would like to share a book I received in my Usbornne books kit when I signed up to be a rep for them. As I looked through the book I knew What a Wonderful Word: A Collection of Untranslatables from Around the World by Nicola Edwards (Author),  Luisa Uribe (Illustrator) would make a wonderful Homeschool Resource to use in our Spelling Class as Charlie and I will be able to learn words no, one else has heard.

Charlie and I sat down to look through the book which is small enough to fit inside my purse. Charlie loved the cover of the book with the children on the front and all kinds of words. You open the book and see a old man sitting on a hill with his Dog looking out at the world. Would you like to join him?

Oh, wow there is a Reindeer. I wish I could bring him home with me. Next is the page of contents and a introduction to the book. Then we dive into the words like Verschlimnmbesserung from German and it means a supposed improvement that makes things worse. Then we learned about Nakama which is Japanese and means friends who are like family. Which is what my readers are. At the back of the book is a word about pronunciation Charlie can use in his Homeschool Language Arts Classes.

About:

Have you ever wished there was a word for friends who are like family to you, or for the way you hesitate when you’ve forgotten someone’s name? Did you know there was a special word for the distance a reindeer can travel before needing the toilet? Or for when you search for something in the water using only your feet? This hand-picked collection of untranslatable worlds from all over the world celebrates the magic of language, with gorgeous original artwork and fascinating facts about each word and the culture it comes from.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
