Recommended Website: Royal Kona Coffee
Age Range: All (All grades; children with parental supervision) Hawaii may be best known for producing pineapples and macadamia nuts – but did you know that Hawaii also produces coffee?
That’s right, Kona coffee groves thrive near the world’s largest volcano, Mauna Loa, on the big island of Hawaii. At today’s website you can see how Kona coffee gets from bean to cup. You’ll see the coffee groves, coffee flowers, unripe coffee “cherries,” and see how the beans are removed from the coffee fruit. Through text and photographs you’ll learn how the beans are processed, sorted, and roasted to produce Kona coffee. Learn:
- 50 Years Ago in Hawaii
- Processing Kona Coffee
- Harvesting Kona Coffee
- How Kona Coffee is Grown
- And more!
Also, here’s a 3-minute video tour of one of Hawaii Coffee Company’s sister brands, Lion Coffee. Scroll down to the video, How Coffee is Made: Inside Lion Coffee’s Roastery.
Recommended Website: The Birth of the Hummingbirds
Age Range: All (All grades; children with parental supervision) This YouTube video provides a stunning video, set to the music of Mozart, of the birth of two hummingbirds.
You can watch the mother building the nest, see the eggs hatch, and get a unique view of how the mother bird feeds her young and prepares them for independence. The video is approximately 8 minutes in length.
Some interesting facts: a hummingbird egg is very small – like the size of a small jelly bean or pea. And the nest opening is only about the size of a large walnut, ping pong ball or golf ball.
And here are some amazing pictures of Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds from the Bird Photo Gallery of the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center.
Recommended Website: Grand Canyon River Archeology Virtual Tour
Age Range: 9 and up (Grades 4 and up; children with parental supervision) The National Park Service provides a stunning virtual tour of archaeological excavations along the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park.

When you get to the site, you’ll see an introduction and an explanation of how to take the virtual tour (under “Navigation”). Or use the menu on the right side of the page to explore by site. You’ll find a dozen excavation sites through watching a panoramic view on a screen and reading the interesting text below it including:
- South Rim
