Welcome back to our series sharing Unique Holidays? May 8th. There is a lot to celebrate today. Take a look at all the Holidays below and let me know which one you most would like to celebrate and why.
Child Care Provider Day or Daycare Provider Day – Friday before Mother’s Day
Child Care Provider Day is today. It is also referred to as Daycare Provider Day. Child Care provider is more inclusive, so most prefer to call it that. Either way you call it, this day gives recognition and appreciation to the millions of people involved with providing care to children of working families. Child care providers have the health and safety of our children in their hands. They spend many hours with your child, teaching them educational, social, and behavioral skills. In some cases, child care providers spend more waking time with your child than you do!
Use today to let your child care provider know how much they are appreciated. Give them a card, and a big thank you. Small gifts are acceptable, but not a requirement.
If you are a child care provider, we thank you for all that you do for our children.
Iris Day celebrates beautiful and attractive late spring bloomers. With or without a beard, Iris are popular among homeowners and gardeners. With a little luck, you have Iris blooming in your flower beds today. Although, I am not lucky enough to have one.
Celebrate Iris Day by enjoying these plants, because its easy to grow latebloomers. If you don’t have any in your yard, get some and plant them today. You can also enjoy this day by going to a floral shop to buy Iris to put into your favorite vase.
Today is a great opportunity to learn more abut how to grow and care for Iris. Which is what Charlie will be studying in our #Homeschool Class this week.
Iris flowers have spiritual importance in Japan they ward off evil spirits. On Iris Day in Japan, people put Iris leaves in their baths. Which is believed to prevent illness. They also drink juice from tIris plant in their Sake to ensure longevity. Does it work? I don’t know all I can say is try it and you be the judge!
Military Spouses Day the Friday before Mother’s Day
Military Spouses Day a day that is celebrated on U.S. Military bases around the world, and anywhere a military spouse can be found. I need to tell Granny Sherry and Leslie this so they can celebrate there husbands.
Military Spouse Appreciation Day is a day to recognize and honor the real backbone of the military….. the spouses of our soldiers. The day recognizes the contributions made by military spouses to the spirit and well being of soldiers and military communities. Where would Military moral be without the spouses behind them?
Married military personnel use this day to pamper their spouse in any way possible. If they’re away on duty, they can still send a card, flowers, candy or gifts.
Show your patriotism. Chances are you’ve expressed your appreciation to the men and women in the armed forces that serve and protect you. Today is your opportunity to do the same, for the spouses behind those brave people.
To all the military spouses out there, we thank you for being the rock solid foundation behind your partner, as he or she performs their duty to our country.
Your support to them is vital to the welfare of your loved one, as well as to the safety and security of every American. We thank you. Without you we would be in a world of hurt.

National Outdoor Intercourse Day
Today is National Outdoor Intercourse Day (NOIT). It’s a day to get out in the great outdoors and do the nasty. (Why is such a beautiful and pleasurable activity referred to as “the nasty”!?)
This special day seems most popular in the Pacific Northwest, where it originated on the college campus of Washington State University. It doesn’t take much encouragement to prompt most people, and especially college students, to participate in this day.
Although, I don’t know about you but I know I am not participating in this Holiday and I know if I asked David he wanted to he would say no, way no how.
The Webster Dictionary defines Intercourse as “to communicate”. Using this definition, its perfectly okay to have intercourse with anyone outdoors, and indoors, too!
The Roots of National Outdoor Intercourse Day:
Around 2015, Washington State University banned blankets from the grounds of the campus, for fear that it would be used for reasons other than picnicking. … bad decision. Tell that to a bunch of young college students, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to guess how they would react.
The activity for this special day is not intended for public viewing. Judging and prizes are not awarded. But, participants report that excitement over the risk of getting caught or seen heightens the enjoyment. But I don’t think so do you?
Determining the Date:
Students suggested the day should be celebrated on the 69th day of the year, or “69th of March”. They realized March was not a good month for this kind of outdoor activity, so May 8th was selected. Why this date, is uncertain.
Did You Know? American English language has evolved over the centuries. In the early days of our nation, politicians and officials used the word “intercourse” to describe communication and social interaction. I sure didn’t know that did you?
This day eventually evolved to take on a somewhat different meaning, when the word “sexual” was put in front of it.
National Train Day– Saturday closest to May 10th
The year 1869 was a really exciting time in America. The Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads were speeding across the wild. American frontier, were laying tracks for what would soon become the first Transcontinental rail line.
Construction was often done at great peril, as vast areas of the West were truly wild and unsettled. Once completed, train service would be connected from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, making the world a whole lot smaller. This would also change the face of America.
On May 9, 1869 the tracks of the two railroad companies met up at Promontory Summit, Utah. A golden spike was driven into the final connection of the two tracks. The first Continental Rail Line was 1,776 miles long. Towns, big and small, would soon sprout up along the route.
Look at the ways we can celebrate this special day:
- Take a train ride anywhere you wish. If I could I would take Charlie on a Train to Oklahoma just like Suzzzane used to do to celebrate her Birthday.
- In Homeschool if David hadn’t been working we could have went on a #FieldTrip to a train museum. Since my family can’t go you should take yours.
- Explore train and railroad history. Which Charlie will be studying in #Homeschool this week
- Join a train club – there are many out there. I wonder if I could find one for David and Charlie to join.
- Watch a movie that has trains in it. Charlie and David will be watching Throw Momma From A Train and Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
National Windmill Day – the second Saturday in May
Did you know today is National Windmill Day. A national day in the Netherlands (also called Holland). Holland is home to thousands of windmills.
Which have helped reclaim the land from the Sea, pumping countless amounts of water over dikes, and back into the sea. Windmills are also essential for industry, most notably flour mills.
Increasing the numbers of windmills being installed in Holland, Europe, and the United States and many other countries for a new purpose….. to provide clean, Carbon less energy for a power hungry world.
The Netherlands has about 1,200 windmills remaining in their Country. Only about 300 windmills are operational and have been designated as National Monuments.
On National Windmill Day, over 950 windmills in Holland open their doors to visitors, providing them with an up close look at the inner workings of Windmills.
Recognizing the importance of windmills to produce “green” energy, I would like to encourage you to use this day to support Windmill research. To promote the development and installation of Windmills in your community.
Happy National Windmill Day
It’s time to get out your sandals and flip flops out because today is No Socks Day. There are a lot of days when don’t wear socks and neither does Charlie. But David always wears socks. How about you?
Go ahead….. free your toes of the confines of socks and stockings and lets give those toes of yours a breath of fresh air. The creators of this Holiday wanted t remind you that No Socks Day will reduce your laundry load. Which is healthy for the environment.
Remember this is one easy Holiday to participate in just leave your socks and stockings off, and let your toes enjoy a moment in the sun!
Washing your feet prior to participating in No Socks Day is a requirement, but painting your toe nails is completely optional.
Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day) commemorates the end of fighting in Europe during World War II. After years of war, The Third Reich of Nazi Germany was defeated. Millions of people were killed. Adolf Hitler, Germany’s Dictator, had committed suicide in his bunker in Berlin.
The German Army ceased fighting on May 2, and formally surrendered unconditionally, on May 7th. The surrender of all German forces was arranged for May 8 at 11:01. The Allied countries planned to celebrate victory, and the cessation of hostilities.
Did you Know? The original planned date for the celebration of V-E Day, was May 9th, 1945. But, journalists caught wind of the plans. So, the U.S. and Britain moved the date up by a day to May 8th. Russia kept to the original planned date for May 9th. Russia still celebrates V-E Day on May 9th.
