Welcome to our series sharing Unique Holidays: May 2rd, 2022. I would like to ask you to check out the Holidays being celebrated today and let me know which Holiday you most want to celebrate and why. Charlie and I would like to celebrate the Turtle by visiting the Fort Worth Zoo. Would you like to go with us?
It’s Lucky Penny Day and perhaps a Lucky Penny will be lucky for you today.
Taken at face value, Pennies doesn’t buy you much, if anything like the Penny used to. During your parents and grandparents days, a Penny bought a lot of things including “Penny Candy” which Penny Candy got its name because a piece of candy cost a Penny. Inflation year after year after year, eroded the Penny’s value. There has even been some discussion as to whether to discontinue the Penny. What do you think keep the Penny or stop making it and why?
Pennies still serves a very useful purpose orat least some Pennies becaause they are lucky Pennies which are Pennies found on the ground. Remember not all of the Pennies you find will be lucky. But, it will only take one lucky Penny used to scratch off the mega winner on a Lottery Ticket.
Superstition has it that you should only pick up a Penny that is face up.
Uses for Pennies:
- You could give someone a Penny for there thoughts.
- Put your “two cents” in you will need two Pennies
- Pennies are a necessity for Penny Pinchers
- A Penny can take the place of a screwdriver when nothing else is available.
Victoria Day(Canada) – Monday preceding the 25th
Victoria Day is held in honor of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) to celebrate the birthday o long reigning Queen of England. Victoria Day is celebrated in England, Canada and other former British Colonies and territories. Queen Victoria’s 63 year reign of the huge global British Empire, was the longest of all Monarchs.
In Canada, Victoria Day is a Federal holiday. After the Queen’s death an act of the Canadian Parliament established this holiday on May 24th. In 1952, Victoria Day was moved to the Monday preceding May 25th, and became an official Canadian federal holiday
World Turtle Day is an international holiday that was created for two reasons. First, this holiday is to celebrate and enjoy both Turtles andTortoises. Secondly, this holiday is to educate people about Turtles, and how to protect Turtles, and how to save their disappearing natural habitat.
Turtles and Tortoises have a long life span. Many species live 35 to 50 years. Species have been known to live 150-200 years. Some species are Carnivores, while others are Herbivores. Turtles and Tortoises populations are decreasing rapidly. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, 129 of 300 species of Turtles and Tortoises are on the endangered species list.
Did you know you can tell the gender of a Turtle by the noise it makes. Male Turtles grunt, while female Turtles hiss.
What’s the difference between Turtle and a Tortoise?
Turtles and Tortoises are Reptiles, dating back over 200 million years. There is one major difference. A Tortoise lives on land. A Turtle lives in the Water for most of the time. Now that you know the difference, I’m sure you realize that “Turtle” you bought at the Pet Store and the one you saw in the Park or even your back yard, was actually a Tortoise. Now that you know the difference, no one will complain, if you refer to them as “Turtles”, regardless of species.
I would like to let you know there are Turtle Festivals. Would you like to attend one?
Famous Turtles
The most famous turtles are:
- The four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo and Donatello

- Dress up like a Turtle.
- Watch a television show or movie with Turtles in it. Like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Finding Nemo?
- Research and learn more about Turtles and Tortoises, and how you can help protect Turtles and their habitat.

World Turtle Day was created in 2000 and the holiday was founded by Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson. This annual holiday event is sponsored by the American Tortoise Rescue organization.
