Good morning welcome back to our series showcasing Unique Holidays: May 13th. Take a look through the event I have listed and let me know which one you would most like to celebrate and why.
Charlie and I can’t participate in this day because we don’t have any Frogs. Do you? What we can do is watch Dennis the Menace the TV show were he and Mr. Wilson enter Dennis frog into the Frog Jumping Contest. Before you ask me what happens your just going to have to watch the show to see.
Frog Jumping Day is a great day to jump like a frog. Or, is today intended to jump “over” a frog? Either way, today is a fun day. But, is this truly the reason for this day? Read on………
The roots of Frog Jumping Day go back to Mark Twain’s first short story. It was first published in 1865 as “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog”. Later, he published it as “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”. It is also known under a third title “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”.
While we have discovered many links and references to Frog Jumping Day evolving from this Mark Twain short story, we have yet to discover the reason for this particular date. May 13th is neither the date of Mark Twain’s birth , nor his death.
How is the best way to celebrate Frog Jumping Day?
- Read Mark Twains story “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog”
- Also, we don’t think Mark Twain would mind if you jumped like a frog or jumped a frog today.
Hummus is one food neither David or I care for. But Charlie and his grandmother Sherry both like Hummus with Pretzel Chips. Do you like Hummus? Do you make your own or purchase it from the store? Do you buy the plain or a flavored Hummus?
Let’s give three cheers to the tasty little legume with a long history. Who enjoys world wide popularity, because Hummus is packed with protein, fiber and vitamins.
Did you know Today is International Hummus Day! Theholiday was created to “celebrate the love of Hummus”. According to theholiday’s creator, International Hummus Day is about “connecting people all over the world around Hummus. I
To have a conversation about Hummus, one must talk about the main ingredient, Chickpeas, also called “Garbanzo Beans”. Chickpeas are a legume, a vegetable related to Garden Sweet Peas. Have you ever heard of Garden Sweet Peas because I haven’t.
These Peas are neither dairy nor a nut, so there are only a few people who may be allergic to them. Chickpeas have been around for thousands of years, dating back to an estimated 6,700 B.C.
At that time, Chickpeas were found in the wild, and man had not yet begin to cultivate crops. The first historical written record goes back to 1,200 B.C. Chickpeas are native to the Middle East. Egypt, Israel and Lebanon each claim to be where they originated.
There is definitely a lot to love about Chickpeas because they taste good and are eaten by both humans and animals. Chickpeas are healthy and nutritious. They’re high in protein and fiber, Vitamin C, B6, Foliates and Potassium.
In addition to it’s nutritional value, Garbanzo Beans have health benefits, including reducing hunger pangs, lowers cholesterol levels, and reduces the risk of cancer.
Making Hummus is simple and there are many recipes because Hummus goes well with a wide variety of foods. It’s good on crackers. You should try Hummus as a dip, with a stick of Celery or Carrots.
In addition to Chickpeas as the main ingredient, other items that may be included are: oOive Oil, Sesame Paste (called “Tahini”), Garlic, and a variety of Vegetables. Which may be why David doesn’t care for Hummus.
In recent years, manufacturers have become creative, with al sorts of flavors, including Avocado, Lemon Artichoke, Red Pepper, Smoky Bacon and Taco Seasoning to name a few.
Leprechaun Day is a dedicated to the Elves of Ireland. Everyone knows Saint Patrick’s day is a huge Holiday in March that celebrates Irish pride and everything about Ireland. But, Leprechauns with their precious, hidden pot of gold, deserve their own day reserved just for them. Don’t you think so?
According to Irish legend, or folklore, Leprechauns have a hidden pot of gold. If you catch a Leprechaun, he must give you his pot of gold. Lets go look for him.
On Leprechaun Day, we suggest you take a few minutes to admire your own “pot of gold”. Or, do something to grow or increase the size of your own pot of gold.
In the meantime I think I will eat some Lucky Charms Cereal with Charlie because they have a Leprechaun on the box and may give us luck when looking for the Pot of Gold. Would you like to have a bowl with me?
Lucky Charms is an American brand of breakfast cereal produced by
General Mills since 1964. If you haven’t had Lucky Charms the cereal consists of toasted Oat pieces and multi-colored Marshmallow shapes (or marshmallow bits). The label features a Leprechauns mascot, Lucky, animated in commercials.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
