National Sea Shell Day

Today is the first day of Summer and it’s time to hit the beach, soaking up rays, and searching for Seashells making perfect sense that today is also National Sea Shell Day.

Seashells are found on beaches around the world. As Seashells crumble and break down, Seashells help to form the Beach where we love to Sun bathe and swim. Beach goers young and old, love to collect Seashells of all shapes and sizes. We take Seashells home and put Seashells on display, as a reminder of those warm, Sunny days on the Beach.

I have a question for you. What is your favorite Seashell? Conch, Clam, or a Sand Dollar? Chances are, you collect all kinds of Seashells. As you pick Seashells off the Beach, make sure the shell is empty and not alive. When in doubt, gently, place the Seashell back in the Ocean. With a little luck, the tide will take the Seashell safely into Sea, and not back onto the Beach.

Did you know the best time to search for Seashells is from an hour before to an hour after low tide. Most Seashells can be found along the high tide mark. During peak Summer Season, thousands of people are on the Beach, looking to beat you to the treasure trove of unbroken Seashells. The most successful Seashell hunt occurs at first light, when Seashells from the night before are most plentiful.

The Guinness World Book of Records has a category for the largest human image of a Seashell which included 1.093 people.

The History and Origin of National Sea Shell Day:

National Sea Shell Day was created and is promoted by “The Beaches of St. Myers and Sanibel”. This holiday was created in 2016 and is now celebrated annually.

There is no presidential proclamation, nor any documentation from the U.S. Congress, to support this as a true U.S. “National” holiday. The creators make no mention on their website, to any efforts to obtain official “National” status.

National Selfie Day

Today is National Selfie Day and it’s a cinch to participate in this holiday. And, it’s fun! Just take your smartphone out of your pocket take a selfie. Or you could get a couple friends, and take a selfie with them. Make sure to put on a big smile and, don’t forget to post the Selfie on Facebook.

Selfies are extremely popular and millions of selfies are taken each and every day. It kind of makes you wonder why we need a holiday to encourage us to take a selfie.

Most people believe selfies originated when smartphones came on the scene. Smartphones have built-in, hi pixel cameras, with a lens on both sides of the camera, making it easy to take a selfie. In actuality, selfies were around for a long, long time, they just weren’t called “selfies”. Back in the day of film based cameras, some cameras had a delay feature on the camera which you could set the camera up on a table or tripod, aim the camera, and press the delay button which was usually ten seconds. Then, you had to run to where the camera was aimed and pose. They were not called selfies. Although, some people referred to these photos as “self-portraits”.

If a picture you take of yourself is called a “selfie”, shouldn’t a picture you take of you and a group of friends be called a “groupie”?

The History and Origin of National Selfie Day:

Our research did not find the creator of this holiday but this day was originated sometime after the arrival of smartphones with built-in cameras with the capability to take hand-held selfies. At, most this holiday has been around since the early 2000’s.

We found no documentation supporting this to be a formal “National” day, which requires a presidential proclamation, or an act of Congress.

Thank you,
