Welcome back to our series sharing Unique Holidays: June 13th, 2021. Enjoy your Sunday and take a look at today Holiday and let me know if you would like to celebrate it or not.
I remember as a child Sewing with my grandmother and not only making a Quilt but also Barbie Clothes for Suzzie’s dolls when she was little. I sure miss those times.
Especially when I visit a friend like Sonya Enslow Caudle for Charlie and David to mow and weed her yard. While there she showed me the quilt she was working on.
The quilt was so pretty. Seeing her creation and her craft room makes me want to get back to quilting. Which I can have Charlie help me with and it would be a class for Charlie in Homeschooling. being a Sewing Class.
I found a Pink Sewing Machine and a Craft Table I would like to get at Walmart but before I do I need to redo my office and make a space for Sewing.
Sewing Machine Day celebrates a very important invention —– the sewing machine. Did you know the first sewing machines were made in France in the 1830s.
It wasn’t until 1846, that Sewing Machined were patented in the U.S. What a great invention. Prior to it’s creation, clothes items were sewn together by hand…stitch by stitch.
People who know how to use a sewing machine are dwindling in number. Our mothers and grandmothers had a sewing machine in the house. They used it, too. But, look around your house. Do you have a sewing machine? Chance are, the answers is no.
I have my grandmothers Sewing Machine which I need to have serviced. Then I could teach Charlie to sew and we could use her Sewing Machine to create not only a quilt but clothes for Charlie’s Wrestling figures.
If you have a sewing machine, enjoy sewing things with it today. If not, consider picking up sewing as a hobby and purchasing a Sewing Machine of your own.
The History and Origin of Sewing Machine Day:
There remains a mystery around the date for this day. Almost all documentation on the internet suggests that June 13th is the date for Sewing Machine Day.
But, we found no information why this date was selected but we did find an occasional reference to September 10th as the day for this holiday which is the date that the sewing machine was patented. We also found a single reference to “New Sewing Machine Day” on March 1st.
If you sew, you have two days to celebrate Sewing Machine Day…..lucky you!
National Weed Day:
Today is Weed Your Garden Day. ….as if we are not already spending copious amounts of time attacking the weeds in our gardens! Which Charlie and David did this morning when they had two yards to mow.
Left unchecked, weeds will choke out many garden flowers and Vegetables. At the very least, the competition Weeds give for Sunlight, Water and Nutrient, will cause your plants to be less productive.
The purpose of this special day, is to spend an extra 5-10 minutes weeding your garden. When I found out about this goal, I just laughed! An extra five or ten minutes would barely put a dent in a garden. But, ‘ya never know, this might be just the incentive garden procrastinators need, to get out and pull the weeds.
Are you ready to participate in this special day!? Then, go out to your garden and start pulling those pesky weeds and by definition, a weed is any plant that is unwanted in your garden.
This definition includes plants that are otherwise edible, serve medicinal purposes, and those that produce flowers. Some examples of edible weeds are Dandelions and Purslane.
We all know that Milkweed has medicinal benefits. But, we do not want them in the garden and then there are many colorful wildflowers that make their way into our Vegetable gardens, where they’re considered weeds.
Why is it that weeds grow more prolific than our garden flowers and Vegetables? Right now, our gardens have been planted for a long enough time, that weeds are growing thickly and rapidly.
Weeding is a daily chore. After your complete your weeding, lay down a thick layer of mulch, to suppress the growth of new seeds. Which is what Charlie and David will be doing this weekend.

The History and Origin of National Weed Your Garden Day:
Our research has yet to discover the creator of this special day, or why this Holiday was created. This is surprising, as this is a new holiday. The earliest reference to this special day only dates to around 2015.
Like so many recent holidays, the title calls it a “National” day. However, we found no documentation supporting this to be a formal “National” day, which requires a presidential proclamation, or an act of Congress.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
