There’s warm gentle breezes wafting in the air and you hear the sound of the Ocean = as you reach for a Ice cold tropical beverage. If you listen closely, you might also hear a steel drum band in the distance. The perfect way to spend a Summer day while celebrating National Pina Colada Day.
The Creation of the Pina Colada
There are several stories about how Pina Coladas were first created, and who created the Pina Colada
According to legend, sometime in the 1800s, a Pirate named Captain Robert Cofresi sailed the Caribbean with his Pirate crew. To improve morale, he concocted the Pina Colada. Starting with Rum, the drink of choice among Pirates, Captain Robert Cofresi added Coconut and Pineapple Juices, serving the drink in a Coconut shell. Did the drink improve moral? Maybe but we’ll never know for certain. The recipe was allegedly lost upon Cofresi’s death in 1825, and with it went any official record of the beverage.
More than a Century later, in 1954, the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico was seeking to create a new signature drink. The hotel management gave this task to Ramon “Monchito” Marrero, a bartender at the hotel’s Beachcomber Bar. After a few days of experimenting, the Pina Colada was created or re-created on August 16th, 1954. Another similar story suggests that Ricardo Garcia, a bartender from Barcelona working at the same bar and hotel, also claims to have created the Pina Colada on this same date.
It would certainly be nice to definitively separate fact from fiction around the creation and history of the Pina Colada.
As you celebrate this holiday don’t forget to listen to “Escape”(1979) by Rupert Holmes which is better known as “The Pina Colada Song”.
It’s easy to celebrate this holiday enjoy a Pina Colada.
The History and Origin of National Pina Colada Day:
It is believed that the “Pina Colada Song” was the inspiration for this holiday. In the early 1980s, shortly after the song was released in October, 1979, this holiday was created but we have not yet discovered who created National Pina Colada Day.
This holiday was originally called “Pina Colada Day” and around 2010, the holiday began to be called “National Pina Colada Day”. This holiday is not a true “National” day because neither the U.S. Congress, nor the President of the United States has proclaimed it a national holiday.
Did you know today is Teddy Bear Picnic Day. A fun Summer day, that all the kids will enjoy. Mom and dad are certain to enjoy Teddy Bear Picnic Day, too, which will keep the kids occupied for a while. If you have the opportunity spend your lunch hour on a blanket under a shade tree with your favorite Teddy Bear.
Stuffed Teddy Bears are a kids favorite because children receive Teddy Bears early in their childhood which children cling to throughout their teenage years. Many Teddy Bears are kept, even as people become an adult. As you read this article, many of us adults know where our Teddy Bear is.
On this Summer day, take your Teddy Bear out for a day in the Sun because it’s time for a Teddy Bear Picnic! Have mom make a few PB& J Sandwiches, grab Cookies, and a beverage and take a blanket out under a shade tree, and enjoy lunch with your Teddy Bear.

The Origin of the Teddy Bear:
During the early 1900s, President Theodore Roosevelt was in office as President of the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a hunter. While hunting in Mississippi in 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a small bear. The Washington Post picked up this story, and made a cartoon of the event. Toy Store owners, Morris and Rose Michtom, wrote to President Roosevelt for permission to call their stuffed Animals “Teddy Bears” which became wildly popular. Their company went on to become the Ideal Toy Company, one of the largest toy companies in the world.
The History and Origin of Teddy Bear Picnic Day:
Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this holiday.
One reader suggests that this holiday may have had something to do with a 1950’s television show called Teddy Bears’ Picnic which was sponsored by my Pet Ice Cream – Brown Bear and Brown Mule – Chocolate Pop-Icicles.
