Review

Welcome to our series sharing Unique Holidays: July 23rd, 2022. Would you take a look at the holidays being celebrated today and let me know which holiday you most want to celebrate and why. As for me I think Charlie and I will study Amelia Earhart in our Homeschool Reading Class. Would you like to join us?

Amelia Earhart Day

Amelia Earhart Day honors the famous Aviation Pioneer. Did you know Amelia Earhart broke many early Aviation records.

Legend and mystery surrounds the final flight and disappearance of Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan. Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan were on a record setting attempt to fly around the world, when they became lost in the Pacific Ocean. On July 2nd, 1937, Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan headed on a difficult leg of the journey towards Howell Island in the Pacific. Weather conditions were less than ideal. While still in radio communication, ships on the ground confirmed that Earhart was having difficulty finding the Island. Ultimately, radio communications faded and died. The plane was never heard from again.

The disappearance of Amelia Earhart’s plane resulted in the largest search and rescue operation to date. The loss of the Plane also sparked rumors as to what caused the disappearance. To this day, theories and speculation still exists about the cause of the disappearance. Some theories involve conspiracies, and Alien abductions.

The proper spelling of her name is Amelia which was misspelled in a song about Amelia, and is now the more popular, albeit incorrect, spelling of Amelia name.

The airplane Amelia Earhart flew on her fateful journey, was a Lockheed Model 10 Electra which was best known as “The Flying Laboratory”.

Todya is a good day to celebrate by learning and reading about Amelia Earhart, or female Aviators. We do not recommend you spend time searching for Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan or the plane. The U.S. Navy searched over 250,000 miles of Ocean to no avail.

The History and Origin of Amelia Earhart Day:

This holiday celebrates the birth of Amelia Earhart on July 24th, 1897.

Cousins Day

Cousin’s Day honors your Aunt and Uncle’s children. They are those kids who are likely close to your age, and endure the countless family get togethers with you. If it wasn’t for cousins, these family events would be much longer.

This is a great day for your cousins. Hold on a minute. If you have cousins, that means your cousins have cousins. And, that’s you! Therefore, today is your holiday, too.

Celebrating should be nothing but fun. Get together with your cousins and hang out, chill, or do anything you want to do as long as its a fun with your cousins.

National Drive Thru Day

People around the world enjoy the speed, and convenience of using drive thru windows. The people working the drive thru windows are customer focused and usually friendly. It is nice to remain in our car to pick up items, or to do our banking. We don’t have to get out of our car in cold Winter Weather, or on a scorching hot Summer day. Drive thru windows are efficient for the restaurant, too. As you know, drive thru windows allows us to shop for a wide range of goods and services without leaving our car. The most popular venues are: Coffee or Donut Shops, Fast Food Restaurants and Liquor Stores in some states. Today we celebrate and enjoy National Drive Thru Day.

The typical restaurant drive thru has two or three windows. The first has a screen with the menu and a microphone to place your order. Over the years the quality, of the microphone has been the source of many jokes. Touch screens are replacing the microphones. Which is labor saving and customers like this feature. The second window is where you pay for your order. At the third pick up window, your order is handed to you. Merchants like bank and drug stores may have only one window to take care of your order quickly.

The best time to use a drive thru is mid-afternoon.
Drive Thru windows have been around for almost 100 years.

Here’s a little history of their creation:

1928 – City Center bank in Syracuse, NY is the first to offer drive thru window service.
1930 – Grand National Bank in St. Louis, MO is one of the earliest banks to offer drive thru services
1947 – Red’s Giant Hamburg on Route 66 in Springfield, MO is credited as the first restaurant to provide drive thru
1948 – In-N-Out Burger begins drive thru service and In-N-Out B urger is the longest surviving restaurant to offer drive thru services.
1951 – Jack-in-the-Box is the first national hamburger chain to offer drive thru services.
1975 – McDonalds opens its first drive thru.
2010s – Touch screens begin to replace microphones for placing your order.

Drive Thru windows have a significant impact on American culture. More and more people grab a quick bite to eat in their cars. As a direct result, auto manufactures began adding cupholders to vehicles in 1983.

Next, go into the drive thru lane for your banking or drug store pick-up. Plan to have lunch and dinner from a restaurant. Take the meal on the go”, using the drive thru at the restaurants. Look for other merchants who offer drive thru services and shop them today.

Money Saving Tip: Merchants may offer freebies, discounts, or promotions on National Drive Thru Day. Check your local newspapers or online for any advertised specials.

The History and Origin of National Drive Thru Day:

National Drive Thru Day was first celebrated in 2002 and the holiday was created by burger chain Jack-in-the-Box. Without a doubt, drive thru day was created to recognize, celebrate, and to promote drive thru windows.

We believe this is not a true “National” holiday. While it is clear that the word “National” was a part of the title of this holiday from the beginning, we found no reference to this as an actual National Holiday. Neither the U.S. Congress, nor the President of the United States has proclaimed today National Drive Thru Day.

Definition of “National” Days

Parent’s Day  – fourth Sunday in July

National Parents Day is a special day to honor our mother and father. A time to celebrate the family structure and family values. The family unit is an important structure for the health of children, and the Nation. That structure, and those values, are established and nurtured by our parents.

Today is not a day of gift giving. That’s for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. The best way to mark this holiday is by spending time with your parents doing something fun. Its also important that you let your mom and dad know how much they are loved and appreciated.

Okay, kids everywhere its National Parents Day time to go out and honor mom and dad!

History and Origin of National Parents Day:

Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this holiday. Most likely, this holiday was created by Chocolate Confectioners.

In 1994, President William (Bill) Clinton proclaimed the fourth Sunday in July as National Parents Day.

National Tequila Day

National Tequila Day is today. A time to drink the distilled Sap of the succulent Blue Agave Plant. It is important to know, that not just any Agave Plant will do. The plant must be specifically from the Blue Agave Plant. As you enjoy a Margarita, or a shot of Tequila you have the Blue Agave Plant to be thankful for.

Agave Plants can be grown in any hot, arid area. By Mexican law, Tequila can only be made from the Blue Agave Plant grown specifically in and around Tequila, Mexico, or a few select areas nearby. To meet demand for Tequila, over 300 million plants are harvested a year!

The word “Tequila” has its roots in the Arabic word “Thaquila”, which means heavy and strong.

The History and Origin of National Tequila Day:

Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this holiday.

National Tequila Day is not a true “National” holiday because neither the U.S. Congress, nor the President of the United States has proclaimed today National Tequila Day . It is possible that this is a Mexican National Holiday. Our research into Mexican resources is quite limited.

Tell an Old Joke Day

Tell an Old Joke Day is celebrated on July 24th

National Tell a Joke Day is always August 16th

Let’s get serious now and no, we are not kidding tell an Old Joke Day and National Tell a Joke Day are real laughs. I hope your day is filled with chuckles.

No doubt about it today, will be a fun-filled day, with lots of laughter. To fully participate and enjoy this holiday, tell some jokes. Which you can do it in person, or send humorous emails to your friends and family. Which is easy enough to do. The more jokes you tell, the more fun this holiday will be. We also encourage you to listen to people telling jokes today. Everybody is getting into the act, and in order to tell a joke, someone has to be present to listen.

The only difference between these two special holidays, is that on Tell an Old Joke Day, you should tell old jokes. The logic behind this, is to keep old jokes from fading away. If old jokes were once funny, they will still produce a laugh. On National Tell a Joke Day you can tell a new joke, or an old one.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
