Good evening, welcome to our series sharing Unique Holidays: July 1st, 2022. There is a lot of holidays to celebrate today. I would like to ask you to check them all out and let me know which holiday you most want to celebrate and why.
Canada Day / Dominion Day – observed the following day, if July 1 falls on a Sunday
Today is the birthday of Canada, which is our Northern neighbor. On this day in 1867, the Confederation of Upper and Lower Canada and some Maritime Provinces joined the Dominion of Canada.
Canada Day is a celebration of Canadian Nationalism, heritage and pride. Did you know Canada became self-governing on July 1st, 1867, with the passage of the British North America Act (BNA Act) in the British Parliament. This holiday was originally known as “Dominion Day” but was changed to Canada Day by the Canadian Parliament on October 27, 1982.
The U.S. and Canada share the largest un-defended border in the world.
Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day
Summer is in full swing and not only is it hot it’s sizzling and we need something to help cool off. What a perfect time for Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day.
Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day gives you the chance to create a new flavor of ice cream. Maybe, your new Ice Cream creation will be a hit, and become wildly popular.
Have you ever wondered how many flavors of Ice Cream is there? Those of you old enough to remember, will recall the “28 Flavors” of Howard Johnson’s restaurant. Howard Johnson’s actually had far more than 28 flavors but they always had 28 flavors in stock at a time. Those 28 flavors is just the tip of the iceberg because the combinations are seemingly endless.
Make today a fun day and hold a formal or impromptu creative Ice Cream party. Make sure you have lots of flavors, toppers, and additives, so people at the party can get real creative.
The History and Origin of Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day:
Our research did not find the creator, or the origin of this holiday but our money is on the Ice Cream makers as originators of this holiday.
International Cherry Pit Spitting Day – first Saturday of month
In 1974, Herb Teichman of Eau Claire, MI. hosted a Cherry Pit spitting tournament as a joke, at a picnic. The contest was a real hit, and has been held annually since that very first tournament in 1974. Little did Teichman know at the time, that this would become an annual event, and spark the creation of International Cherry Pit Spitting Day .
The timing for this holiday on the first Saturday in July is perfect, because Cherries are ripe. As we celebrate the Fourth of July and Summer picnics, fresh Cherries are available in abundance.
Are you looking to break the record? Well, you’d better start practicing. The world record for Cherry Pit spitting is 100.
Celebrate this holiday by holding or participating in a Cherry Pit spitting contest.
Herb Teichman, the originator to the Cherry Pit Spitting contest, set the first Saturday in July for this annual event. There are some references to this holiday always being on July 7th which is is erroneous the holiday is not a fixed date.
The History and Origin of International Cherry Pit Spitting Day:
We know almost everything there is to know about the roots of this holiday but we do not know who created the holiday itself or the year although we suspect it was Herb Teichman, and the holiday was coined a year or two after the first tournament in1974.
We also do not know why the holiday was referred to as an “International” day but, we encourage people around the world to hold a Cherry Pit spitting tournament.
International Chicken Wing Day
International Chicken Wing Day – July 1
National Chicken Wing Day – July 29
Wow, two holidays to celebrate and enjoy Chicken Wings a holiday David and Charlie are for. I know they can’t wait to chow down with Wings!
Buffalo, NY is the home to the Buffalo Chicken Wing which were invented at the Anchor Bar and Grill in Buffalo, NY in 1964 by Teressa Bellisimo. Teressa Bellisimo served her creation as a late night snack for her son Dominic and his College friends. The dish immediately became wildly popular there and the recipe spread, and the dish rapidly became wildly popular in the United States, and ultimately world-wide.
Chicken Wing Day is a celebration of a very popular snack and appetizer but it’s actually more than that, as some people consume Chicken Wings as the main meat course for lunch or dinner.
The original Buffalo Chicken Wing was made by frying Wings and then tossing the Wings in a Spicy Sauce. Blue Cheese is commonly served on the side, because people dip the Wings into Blue Cheese to “cut” the heat of the Sauce. Since the creation of the first Buffalo Wings, many variations have been made. Some Wings are baked, and the selection of Sauces is limited only by your imagination.
Chicken Wings are extremely popular around the world in the U.S. over 27 billion Wings are consumed every year. Wings are most popular at Superbowl parties. Over 1.25 billion Wings consumed during the Superbowl game alone!
We hope that you celebrate both International Chicken Wing Day and National Chicken Wing Day with a big dish of Chicken Wings covered with your favorite Sauces.
Chicken Wing Trivia:
* Prior to the invention of Buffalo Chicken Wings, Wings were largely used as soup stock.
* The Anchor Bar in Buffalo sells more than 70 thousand pounds of Chicken Wings per month.
* Wing Sauces commonly come mild, medium or hot. To many people, especially, the citizens of Buffalo NY, the hotter the Sauce, the better.
* Some folk can not imagine eating Pizza without Wings.
The History and Origin of Chicken Wing Day:
There is a lot known about National Chicken Wing Day in 1977, then Buffalo Mayor Stan Makowski proclaimed July 29th to be Chicken Wing Day. A few years later, the holiday became “National Chicken Wing Day”.
We did not find any documentation confirming this to be a “National” holiday and we found no congressional records or presidential proclamation.
There is little known about International Chicken Wing Day but it seems to have occurred only recently, and does not have much of a following. Its existence seems to make sense and you can’t keep a great snack from being recognized around the world with, a day to commemorate the holiday. But, our research has not uncovered the creator of this day, or when it was first celebrated.
International Joke Day is a very funny day and it’s a real laugher.
There’s plenty of problems, unhappiness in the world. Wouldn’t the world be a far better place if we’d all just chill out a little, and laugh a whole lot more!? If people around the world get into the theme of the holiday, it just might be the start of something great.
Take the opportunity to get the jokes started today. Use the internet to spread funny jokes and stories. Pass the jokes along to everyone on your email list. Hopefully, some of your email “buddies” live outside of the U.S. By sending jokes to them, you’ve helped to get the ball rolling to make this a truly international experience.
The History and Origin of International Joke Day:
Wayne Reinagel created of this holiday in 1994. Wayne wrote us and said “I made this day July 1st, because the year was officially half over and then I used the holiday to promote my joke books”.
United States – This holiday is always observed on July 1
United Kingdom – always celebrated on December 14
Show your appreciation and thanks to all the postal workers you meet today.
When we think about postal workers, postal carriers usually comes to mind. These are the men and women who deliver the mail to you by vehicle or walking, six days a week, under all kinds of weather. Carriers certainly should get recognition today. But, this is a holiday to show appreciation for all postal workers, which is about 490,000 workers in the United States, and over 120,000 in the U.K. This includes the clerks behind the counter, mail sorters, truck drivers, management, and a wide range of other jobs at the Postal Service.
Postal carriers who walk their routes, typically walk 4 to 8 miles per day, with a full bag of mail.
How to Celebrate National Postal Worker Day
It’s easy to participate. Give your thanks to any and all postal workers that you meet. These workers are neither asking nor expecting a gift. Just let them know that they are appreciated but a thank you card is a nice touch.
Postal workers are some of the most innovative people around. They really push the envelope.
History and Origin of National Postal Worker Day:
In the United States, this holiday was created in 1997 by Seattle, Washington postal worker Richard E. Baker. Richard simply wanted to honor his hard working fellow employees.
Neither congress, nor the President of the United States has proclaimed a national holiday for postal workers. Postal workers do not get this day off. Let’s change that. Write your local congressman and the President of the U.S., to voice your support for National Postal Worker Day.
Less information is available on National Postal Worker Day in the U.K. Similar to the U.S., we did not find any proclamation from the U.K government or the queen mum.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
