Welcome to our series sharing Unique Holidays: January 4th, 2021. Its National Spaghetti Day. I wish I could get ahold of my Aunt Jean to make me some of her Spaghetti and Meatballs which were to die for. Before you ask if you could have some, I can’t say I will share because I don’t get them that much.
Although, as a child she always dropped them off at my grandmothers and if my mom didn’t get to them first I would and I would eat them all. Especially the Meatballs. Do you have a favorite Spaghetti recipe you would like to share with Charlie to prepare in his Homeschool Cooking Class?
National Spaghetti Day– always held on January 4th.
Today is National Spaghetti Day. If I could grab a big bowl, fill it with Spaghetti, top it with my favorite sauce, and dig in. And, if you join me, I will want to remind you to not forget the Meatballs and Parmesan Cheese! Salad and Garlic Toast would be good as well.
Did you know Spaghetti is one of over 600 shapes of Pasta and it’s by far, the most popular shape. Many people think of Italy and Italian cuisine, as the birthplace of Spaghetti. In reality Pasta, or Macaroni, dates back to Ancient times. Ancient cultures were cooking Pasta Noodles well before they were introduced to Italy and other parts of Europe. Marco Polo has been wrongly credited with bringing Spaghetti and Pastas to Europe. Records show Europeans cooking Pasta well before Marco Polo began his travels. Peering even farther back in time, Arab cultures were selling dried Spaghetti-like Noodles in open markets in the early 1200’s. The Chinese were cooking Pasta Noodles as far back as 5,000 B.C.
While ancient cultures were making and eating Spaghetti and Pastas well before it came to Europe, it’s the Italians who popularized it in cuisines. It was introduced into the United States through the travels of Thomas Jefferson, who brought it back from Naples, Italy in 1789. Italian immigrants also brought it over with them to the U.S., where its popularity quickly spread.
Did you know Spaghetti in Italian means thin string or twine?
Americans consume about 20 pounds of Pasta per person per year.
We hope you thoroughly enjoy your bowl of Spaghetti today. To completely enjoy this Holiday, make the Spaghetti Noodles yourself. All you need is Flour, Water and a knife.
