Good morning, how are you? I wanted to share our series sharing Unique Holidays: February 3rd, 2022, with you this morning. Let me tell you it is a perfect day to feed the Birds as we have Snow on the ground, and it could be hard for the Birds and Squirrels to find food today.
That is if I can get mom off the couch as she is watching LaBamba because today is The Day the Music Died and working on Lesson Plans for today while watching the movie and singing American Pie. Before you ask me yes, she is crying.
Feed the Birds Day – Always February 3rd.
Today is a perfect day to help the Wild Birds in our backyard to survive the cold Winter by feeding the Birds. That’s exactly why this Holiday was created. Mid and late Winter are hard on all outdoor animals. By mid-winter, food sources become scarcer for the Wild Birds that over-Winter in your backyard. What little food that is available, can get buried under Snow. The bird feeder that you place in your backyard, in view of your picture window, may be entertaining to you as a bird watcher but that Bird Feeder is also vital to the survival of Birds in harsh Winters.
Take today as an opportunity to begin a new hobby. Bird watching. Place a Bird Feeder in a location where it can be seen from indoors. Make sure to keep the Bird Feeder full of Seeds all time. Once Birds are attracted to your feeder, you have adopted them. These Birds become dependent upon the Seeds in your feeder.
Winter Bird Feeding Tip: Seeds are the best source of high Energy food for Wild Birds. Other foods, like Breads, do not contain as much Energy
Schools and businesses are encouraged to participate in this Holiday, and they can hold classes or Seminars in Wild Bird feeding, Winter survival, and educate the public about backyard Birds in general.

History and Origin of Feed the Birds Day:
Feed the Birds Day was created by Bob Matthews of Rochester, NY in 2016. Bob and his wife Debbie are avid Bird watchers. Bob is also the creator of Holiday Insights and The Gardener’s Network.
According to Matthews, Birds in Northern areas of the Country need our help most in the late Winter months. Use this Holiday to start enjoying the hobby of Bird watching, as you help your backyard Birds to survive.
The Day the Music Died – Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash in 1959.
Observance is always February 3rd.
The Day the Music Died Day commemorates the untimely death of singers Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper. These three Rock singers died in an Airplane crash on February 3rd, 1959.
Every generation has their music idols, and these three musicians were among the top of the 1950’s generation. Those who grew up in the fifties mourned the premature deaths of their music idols. Memorials and remembrances occurred for years. Today, there are many websites memorializing their deaths, and detailing the events before and after the tragedy.
This Holiday is an observance, rather than a Holiday. The term “holiday” implies a celebration. The death of these three musicians was nothing short of tragic. Let’s mark this day in recognition of the silencing of the voices of these great singers in their prime.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
