Bartender Appreciation Day – in Europe– always held on February 24th.
Cheers to the Bartenders of the world today, it is World Bartender Day. A day to celebrate the Bartending craft, and to give appreciation to the men and women behind the counters at Bars or Breweries that we frequent.
Tending Bar is among the world’s oldest professions, and a very important job at that. You trust your local Barkeep to fix your drink to your liking, and in a timely manner. In addition to preparing and serving drinks, a Bartender is often a part-time Psychologist. Bartenders are excellent listeners. Many a patron has sought advice, while cozied up to the bar with a drink in hand. Patrons have confessed up things they wouldn’t tell their spouse and even their Church Priest.
Did you know there are all types of Bartenders? A Bartender can be a professional or non-professional. Tending Bar is a skill position. The real professionals attend Bartender’s school for a formal education. They know by heart, how to mix hundreds of drinks. You yourself may have been a casual bartender without even knowing it. If you’ve mixed and served drinks behind a Counter or Event including parties, or your own home, you’ve been a bartender.
Perhaps the most memorable Bartenders were Sam (Ted Danson) and the lovable “Coach” (Nicholas Colasanto) on the television sitcom “Cheers”.
How to Celebrate World Tending bar Day:
- Visit your local Bar or Winery.
- Give your Bartender a warm smile and a hearty thank you.
- Give a generous tip.
- Become a Bartender yourself.

St. Nicholas Day– always on December 6th.
St. Nicholas Day is today. Yes, there really was a Christian Saint Nicholas and he lived in the Country of Greece, just a couple hundred years after the birth of Christ. This Holiday is in honor of Saint Nicholas and his life.
Saint Nicholas became a Priest, and later, a Bishop of the early Catholic Church. True to the Christian concept of giving up belongings and following Christ, St. Nicholas gave up all of his belongings. He was well known for giving to needy people, especially children. There are many tales of him helping out children in need.
The practice of hanging up Stockings originated with Saint Nicholas. As the ancient legend goes, Saint Nicholas was known to throw small bags of gold coins into the open windows of poor homes. After one bag of gold fell into the stocking of a child, news got around. Children soon began hanging their Stocking by their chimneys “in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there”.
It wasn’t until the 1800’s that the spirit of St. Nicholas’ life evolved into the creation of Santa Claus. This happened in America. Santa Claus or evolved from the stories and legends of St. Nicholas. Santa Claus was kind and generous to children. Unlike “St. Nick”, Santa Claus is largely a non-religious character.
History and Origin of St. Nicholas Day:
St. Nicholas Day has been celebrated for hundreds and hundreds of years. This day commemorates the death of this very special, very Holy person on December 6th. Record keeping was not perfect in his time and his death is believed to have been in either 345A.D., or 352 A.D.
Mitten Tree Day– always on December 6th.
Mitten Tree Day is a great holiday for grade school children. But we’ve got ideas for people of any age to enjoy this Holiday at work, too.
Here are ways you can celebrate and enjoy Mitten Tree Day:
- Read the story The Mitten to young children which is a grade school favorite activity.
- Set up a Christmas tree and have people bring in mittens to donate which is popular in both schools and work environments.
- Take a poster board and cut out the shape of a Christmas trees then have the children color and decorate the Christmas Tree. Hang the Christmas Tree on a wall. Then, have each child cut out mittens from construction paper. Have them decorate the mittens and make sure they put their name on their mittens, before hanging the mittens on the tree.
Have a fun and happy Mitten Tree Day.
History and Origin of Mitten Tree Day:
Mitten Tree Day was likely created by a grade school teacher because it’s the perfect grade school craft project or story hour. And, the timing of this Holiday in early December is perfect.
Put on your own Shoes Day– always held on December 6th.
As we researched this Holiday, we kept on asking Why, why why?……. why does this Holiday exist but we found no answer.
We understand the meaning behind Wear Brown Shoe Day, which was celebrated just a few days ago. But what could cause someone to create Put on Your Own Shoes Day? Perhaps, the Holiday was created by young mothers teaching their children how to put their shoes on for the first time!?
Well, regardless of what you think of the Holiday, we celebrate all of the Holidays and we are going to put our own shoes on today. As for you put your stinky toes into your own shoes!
History and Origin of Put on Your Own Shoes Day:
We are totally clueless and we have absolutely no idea who created this Holiday, or when the Holiday was first celebrated. What is even more baffling, is why the Holiday was created.
Thank you,
