National Honey Bee Awareness Day – Third Saturday in August
What’s the Buzz?!
Why is today National Honey Bee Day! I have no, clue but let’s celebrate and show our appreciation for the hard working Honey Bee, who works so hard to produce the liquid Sugary treat, Honey that is loved so much by Bees and humans.
Speaking of hard working, did you know that many Bees have to travel 55,000 miles to produce just one pound of Honey? To get that pound of Honey, those Bees need to gather Nectar from two million Flowers. That’s a lot of Flowers. Isn’t it.
Did you know a single bee will gather just a1/2 teaspoon of Honey in its lifetime. After all of this hard work, Honey Bees deserve this Holiday of recognition. So let’s get to celebrating and have Croissants and Honey.
This Holiday was first established in 2009 for Beekeepers, as a way to promote Honey and to encourage Educational Programs. But, this is too special a day to limit to the Beekeepers. We appreciate hard working Honey Bees, too. After all, Bees produce Honey that we enjoy, and they are vital to the Pollination of a wide array of Fruits and Vegetables. That’s certainly something to appreciate!

The History and Origin of National Honey Bee Day:
National Honey Bee Day was created in 2009 and this Holiday is a sweet day which was declared by Thomas J. Vilsek, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, on August 11, 2009.

It’s a hot Summer day. If you need another reason to enjoy Ice Cream, then you’ve got it. For today, its National Spumoni Day.
Spumoni is an Italian Ice Cream, originating in Naples, Italy. It was brought to America by immigrants in 1870. While Spumoni is enjoyed any day of the year, many people consider it a Christmas time dessert or treat.
Spumoni is made of layers of Ice Cream (usually Vanilla, but sometimes Chocolate) Candied Fruits, Cherries, and Nuts. Pistachios are commonly used. Whipped Cream is included in some recipes.
Canada celebrates Spumoni Day on November 13.
Certainly, you know how to celebrate National Spumoni Day? Have some Spumoni Ice Cream! Which for me would be hard to do because the only time I remember seeing Spumoni Ice Cream was as a child when my parents would take us to Spaghetti Warehouse for dinner.
The History and Origin of National Spumoni Day:
We know that Spumoni was first created in Naples, Italy. Too good to be kept a secret, Spumoni has become popular worldwide.
National Senior Citizens Day honors our elderly population. On this Holiday, were encouraged to recognize and show appreciation for the value and contribution of elderly people to home, family and Society.
In his Presidential Proclamation (August 19, 1988), President Ronald Reagan said “For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older Citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute.
We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older.”
On National Senior Citizens Day, we should:
- Spend some time with senior citizens
- Show our appreciation for senior citizens
- Do volunteer work in support of the elderly

The History and Origin of National Senior Citizens Day:
On August 19, 1988, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5847 creating National Senior Citizens Day to be August 21.
There are many, many other “Senior Citizen Days” on various dates around the world. Many Countries, local communities and organizations have declared or held senior citizen days.
