The let me know which Unique Holiday you want to celebrate and why. Charlie and I are going to do a Dress-Up Class in our Homeschool Drama Class and celebrate National Hat Day by trying on and modeling Hats we can use in our Drama Class. Then when we finish were going to look for a recipe for Bagels and make some for David to take for Breakfast. Would you like to join us as we celebrate the Holiday?
National Bagel Day– Event is always January 15th
There’s a special day to celebrate donuts, so it only makes sense that there should be a special day to give recognition to Bagels. Fortunately for bagel lovers, that day has thankfully arrived. Why National Bagel Day is so special, that some people refer to it as a “Hole-y Event!”
Depending upon who you talk to and what you read, the word bagel and the recipe originates in different areas and a different times. In some places, bagels are spelled “biegels”. Some folks say the word “bagel” comes from the German word “Bougel”, dating back to the 16th century. But, it is believed that the recipe for bagels evolved from the ringed Polish bread “Obwarzanek”, which was invented in the late 14th century. In Krakow, Poland, they were given as gifts to women after childbirth.
Personally, we don’t care too much what it is called, or how it came to be. We are just thankful that there’s plenty of bagels for all of us! As for flavor choice, I’ll take mine with everything!
Setting the date Straight – The date for this special event was February 9. The dated was moved to January 15 by bagel manufacturer Thomas Bagels, to avoid sharing the date with National Pizza Day.
The only requirement for this day, is that you eat bagels. And, have it your way. You can have them toasted or un-toasted. Add whatever you prefer: lox, cream cheese, butter, or your favorite jelly.
National Hat Day– Always January 15th.
National Hat Day is set aside to wear and enjoy a hat of your choice and style. Isn’t it great that hats come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and styles? There’s one to fit every size head and personality.
Hats are used to make a statement, or to promote a cause or a product. Back in 1797, the introduction of the Top Hat almost caused a riot. The top hat was first worn by James Heatherington in London England. As Heatherington strolled through the streets of London, England displaying his Top Hat, crowds gathered, Some people began to push and shove. Heatherington was fined for “going about in a manner that frightened timid people”.
Oh yeah… hats have logical uses, too. Some hats (Aka helmets), offer safety protection. Some hats keep your head warm, or the sun out of your eyes….how boring.
National Hat Day is not intended to just keep your noggin warm. Its a chance to make a statement and to display you favorite headgear. We suggest you wear a number of different hats over the course of the day.
Did you know? More body heat is lost from your head than other parts of the body. So, wearing a hat goes a long way towards staying warm on a cold winter’s day (or night).
Today’s Quote: ” If you don’t get out of the box you’ve been raised in, you won’t understand how much bigger the world is.” – – Angelina Jolie
History and Origin of National Hat Day:
Its no doubt that National Hat Day was created by a hat loving individual or group.
There is no evidence to suggest that this is truly a “National” day, which requires an act of congress.
