Tricks To Riding Your Bike in the Winter
While the winter is not the most popular time for looking for a fat tire electric bike for sale, it isn’t necessarily the wrong time. Many people assume that the incoming cold weather automatically means it is time to put their bicycles away, but that is not the case. In fact, there are many areas of the country where winter is not only prime riding time but also fun riding weather — even in snowy regions.
However, while there are many areas where riding your bike is encouraged in the winter, you will still need to take precautions. Your bike tires and possibly battery will not operate the same way in the winter as in the summer. Additionally, you will need to take measures to protect yourself in the chilly and, at times, frigid weather.
Checking Your Treads
Riding your big tire beach cruiser in the winter requires more grip strength than in the summer. You will want to ensure your tired treads are adequate for snowy and icy conditions, especially if you plan on riding snow-covered trails.
While you can typically do a lot of winter riding with standard mountain bike tires with a healthy tread, you will likely need studded tires for more involved riding. Studded tires have metal studs inserted into the tire’s treads to increase traction and grip on icy paths. However, studded options are not the best choices for traveling on the road because they can increase braking distance and wear.
Tire Pressure & Bike Battery
When discussing tire pressure, it is necessary to understand that tire pressure can decrease by about 1 PSI for every 10-degree drop. The decrease in pressure results from condensing air taking up less space. While you will need to add air to your tires to increase tire pressure, remember that the temperature in the tire will heat up and expand as you ride.
While the cold weather will not deplete your e-bike’s battery rapidly, it can accelerate the usage, affecting the range. It is a well-known fact that li-ion batteries discharge quicker in colder temperatures. Therefore, you will need to compensate for the quicker depletion of the average life of ebike battery.
Appropriate Winter Biking Attire
While most people like to keep things casual while riding a bicycle or prefer to wear aerodynamic suits, the winter is not a time to wear fewer layers. You will need to find attire that is appropriate for the weather you are riding in. For instance, purchase riding gloves, jackets, boots, etc. You will also want to wear ear protection.
If you want to wear aerodynamic clothing, look for thermal options. However, research the item to make sure it is tested at the temperature levels you will experience. While an outfit might be suitable for temperatures above 50° Fahrenheit, the winter will often drop below that in many parts of the Country.
No one expects you to be an expert in Winter riding, especially if this is the first year you are considering it. If you would like assistance, contact a local bike shop for more information.
