The idea of pillows for toddlers seems to be quite controversial. One cannot simply brush the concerns away. It is always advisable to listen to concerns, especially when they involve young children.
That is how you get to know what might be harmful to your little one. In the case of pillows, you will get some insights into how to choose the best pillow for your toddler. As babies grow, they will need a kids mattresses so that they are comfortable as they sleep..
How do you choose the best toddler pillow for your little munchkin? You do not want her to wake up with a stiff neck. That would not do for a restful night or a day of play, giggles, and naps. So, here’s how to choose an appropriate pillow for baby:
- Not the regular pillow!
A regular pillow is not designed to support a toddler’s head and neck. That one is strictly for adults. Luckily, there are toddler pillows which are designed for toddlers. This pillow is designed to accommodate a baby’s proportions. It will not strain the baby’s head and neck, which could lead to poor posture as the baby grows.
- The right time to introduce the pillow
A majority of parents and baby experts agree that the best time is when the little graduates from crib to bed. That is around 18-24 months. However, different parents have different opinions on this one. Some parents claim they introduced the pillow earlier and their children are fine.
Truth be told, no one child is the same as the next. It is therefore up to individual parents to decide if junior is ready for some head support.
Signs to look out for
- If baby sleeps with the head propped up, there’s a sure sign.
- Tossing and turning most of the night. Try a pillow and see if that stops.
- Sleeping with their head lying on a teddy or their favorite blankie.
- Getting their head propped up when lying on the couch.
If Bennie prefers to lie down with his head elevated, it is time to get the toddler pillow.
- Does your child have allergies?
If your child is allergic to any materials like wool or feathers, you do not want to get them a pillow made from those.
- Soft or firm?
The toddler pillow should provide comfort as well as support. To test if the pillow is just right, press down on it. If it does not regain its shape, then it is too soft. A baby could suffocate on that. If on pressing down it does not move at all, then that is too hard. You poor baby will suffer untold comfort on that one. Picture your head propped up on a rock.
- The cover material
Most toddler pillows have a cotton cover, but there are two types of cotton:
- Regular cotton
- Organic cotton
If you do not want your baby breathing in industrial toxin while sleeping, go for organic cotton. It is usually clearly marked.
Other cover materials include:
- Synthetic fibre
- Cotton polyester blend
Remember that babies can be quite messy, so you will need to wash the pillow regularly. But if you get the best toddler pillow, washing should not be such a headache as you can throw the whole pillow into the machine and be done with it.
