I would like to share the self-help book The Quiet Shift: Navigating Through the Emotional and Economic Impact of Aging Parents In the Family by Dr. Nicole Simpson which I received a copy of in exchange for this review.
The Quiet Shift is easy to understand and will capture your eye from the first sentence through the last. I found the book thought provoking and I believe every adult needs a copy of The Quiet Shift whether our parents are alive or not. As an adult you will find you need this book even if you do not have children.
The Quiet Shift is a wakeup call because we don’t know how or when our lives will change due to illness or some tragic accident. Just like with my daughter Suzzane who was killed at 16. Or my dad who was fine that morning and went into surgery and came out and came home. Since he was feeling better my sister and brother took him out to dinner.
That evening when they went back to the care after eating my dad slipped into a coma and was in it for over 2 weeks when we had to take him off life support and he passed away. Life can take those we love in the blink of an eye and The Quiet Shift can help us in so many ways if we take the time to read it.
As I get older and also David’s parents are nearing there 90’s we don’t know if there will be someone available to take care of our needs or even there needs which bothers me. Especially knowing none of us will have the financial means to take care of us and which can be overwhelming. I would like to ask you to read The Quiet Shift and to purchase copies for those you love. If you have parents and siblings and/or adult children you must have this discussion because your life will shift.
I need to do with my brother but I am scared to because I don’t know how he would react but he doesn’t have anyone else and if he doesn’t get a Will everything he has could be tied up in court and when it comes time to bury him we wouldn’t know what he would like to have had done. Please PRAY for me as I try and talk to him and David because Charlie still has years before he is 18 and anything could happen to David and I and we don’t have anything in place for Charlie which isn’t good.
About:
Growing older is a natural part of life. Today people are examining their lives from the perspectives of legacy and posterity and the central theme to both are finances and the emotional capacity to manage them, while preserving healthy family relationships.
The Quiet Shift is a very candid and honest look at the scenarios that life will eventually present to us all, and the solutions and remedies that are available to us to ensure that we find ourselves and those who we love and care for on the winning side of this often-challenging process. It is through these very real stories that Dr. Simpson and Ms. Stanford journey through that will help unlock many of the key elements, and principles necessary to take you from one stage of preparation to the next, and to illuminate from a proactive perspective what aging and caregiving looks like no matter where you are in this process.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
