About the Book:

Why do men commit acts of violence, struggle to talk about their emotions, misuse their power, or take risks with their health? The Problem with Men offers a surprising answer. Dr. Ron Levant, a world-renowned psychologist, has spent his career trying to understand men like his abusive father as well as his own perplexing behavior.

Using his lived experience as the backdrop, Levant takes readers on a gripping and, at times, heartbreaking journey of discovery, providing a rare front-seat glimpse at acid tests, threesomes, communes, state psychiatric institutions, jails, encounter groups, therapy sessions, wayward youth programs, fatherhood courses, and Berkeley protest movements.

With grace, honesty, and insight, Dr. Levant reveals his own struggles to overcome his upbringing and become a better man in his quest to help readers understand the societal forces that shape men for the better—and the worse.

In today’s politically charged atmosphere, is masculinity on the ballot? The preeminent pioneer in the psychology of men and masculinity, Dr. Ronald F. Levant, a professor and former president of the American Psychological Association, has devoted over 40 years of his career to studying masculinity. In his new memoir, The Problem with Men, Levant delves into how masculinity has impacted and complicated the workplace, the home, and politics—here and around the world.

AKRON, Ohio — Why are some men so problematic—unable to describe how they feel, neglecting their health, exploding in rage, and resorting to violence when their manhood is questioned? An internationally recognized psychologist and past president of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Ronald F. Levant, has devoted most of his professional career to finding the answer. He led the creation and development of a new field of psychology dedicated to studying men and masculinity.

In his memoir, The Problem with Men: Insights on Overchttps://amzn.to/3ZlMpIroming a Traumatic Childhood from a World-Renowned Psychologist (Koehler Books; September 2024; Hardcover; ISBN: 979-8-88824-432-6), Dr. Levant reveals how his work has been driven by his quest to understand men like his abusive father and his perplexing behavior. He also shares his personal story—starting with a childhood marked by beatings and fear, followed by an adolescence defined by drinking and delinquent behavior, and a young adulthood marred by depression—to inspire and guide other trauma survivors, especially fathers and sons, as well as the women who love and suffer with them.
