The Nasher Sculpture Center Announces Sarah Sze, Opening Spring 2024

The Mommies Reviews

The pivotal American artist will debut a series of new, site-specific installations

DALLAS, Texas (November 8, 2023) – The Nasher Sculpture Center announces a solo exhibition by Sarah Sze, showing new works created specifically for the Nasher’s Renzo Piano-designed building by one of the most celebrated artists of recent years. Sarah Sze will be on view from February 3 to August 18, 2024.

Always attuned to the built environment, Sze’s installations at the Nasher will integrate painting, sculpture, images, sound, and video engaging with the surrounding architecture to create intimate systems that reference the rapidly changing world. Stretching over three of the museum’s galleries, this extraordinary exhibition will blur the boundaries between making and showing, process and product, digital and material ultimately to question how objects and Images acquire their meaning.

Widely recognized for expanding the boundaries between mediums, Sze uses a complex palette of materials, both analog and digital, to question how we mark time and space. From an Invisible taut thread to a swiftly moving animal, the artist orchestrates dizzying compositions that are sensitively attuned to the spaces they inhabit. Recent exhibitions have seen the artist transform architectural structures as iconic as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and as overlooked as an abandoned waiting room in a South London train station.

“The Nasher Sculpture Center is tremendously excited to be working with Sarah Sze on new installations conceived for our galleries,” says Director Jeremy Strick. “Her dynamic, expansive constructions of objects and images poetically encompass contemporary life and promise, in their interaction with Piano’s timeless building, an unparalleled experience for our visitors.”

A catalog will be published documenting the exhibition with contributions from Nasher Chief Curator Jed Morse and other scholars.

The Nasher Sculpture Center’s 2024 exhibitions are made possible by leading support from Frost Bank. Sarah Sze is made possible by support from the Dallas Art Fair Foundation and the Dallas Tourism Public Improvement District (DTPID).

About Sarah Sze:

Over the course of her artistic career, Sarah Sze has created immersive installations that challenge the static nature of art and examine how images and objects can ascribe meaning to the rapidly changing world we inhabit. In recent years, Sze has returned to painting, the medium in which she was first trained. Comprising constellations of painted and collaged elements, her expansive abstract landscapes explore a visual world that is constantly evolving, degrading, and generating new ways of seeing. From May to September 2023, a major solo exhibition of Sze’s latest works titled Timelapse was shown at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Sze was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2003 and a Radcliffe Fellowship in 2005. In 2013, Sze represented the United States at the Venice Biennale with an exhibition titled Triple Point. Her work has been exhibited at the Whitney Biennial (2000), Carnegie International (1999) and several international biennials, including Berlin (1998), Guangzhou (2015), Liverpool (2008), Lyon (2009) and Venice (1999 and 2015). Sze’s works are held in several permanent art collections, including MoMA, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Foundation Cartier in Paris, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate in London. Permanent public works include pieces at LaGuardia Airport and The Metropolitan Transportation Authority in New York, and the Seattle Opera House. In 2021 Sze unveiled a new permanent commission for the Storm King Art Center, New York.
