Charlie and I thought you might like to see this children’s book about the day in the life of a school nurse which is inside our Christmas Gift Guide 23: The Boo-Boos of Bluebell Elementary School by Chelsea Lin Wallace (Author), Alison Farrell (Artist). I received a physical copy of this book in exchange for this review.

Life is funny we closed our Back-To-School Guide 23 last week and then this week The Boo-Boos of Bluebell Elementary School arrives which would have been a perfect addition to the Gift Guide. Charlie and I browsed through The Boo-Boos of Bluebell Elementary School this morning. Charlie let me know he wished he knew where his old school nurse Mrs. Janie was because this would have made a wonderful present for her.

Charlie then let me know he wanted to set the book aside to read with the children he is teaching this year. As well as share the book with my nieces Lily, Dixie and Payton and my nephew Jason so they can get to know more about the school nurses and what they do. Charlie let me know we should add the book to our Homeschool Library.

Charlie and I learned what all a nurse helps with and uses we created a shopping list so we can make an emergency kit for our classroom. We even decided David would be the nurse in our school. Lord helps me I hope I don’t need a nurse because most of the time David isn’t home even though he would make a good nurse, I think.

Charlie said Miss. Peachtree seemed nice and someone all the children would like Charlie and I had fun meeting all the children and learning what was wrong with them. Charlie said the girl with the bloody nose reminded him of me because my nose has been bleeding a lot. Now, I know what to do when it happens thanks to Miss. Peatree.

The Boo-Boos of Bluebell Elementary School is the perfect book for younger children just starting school although even younger children would enjoy the illustrations just as Charlie and I did. I like how even adults can learn from this story and will enjoy learning more about the children and the nurse which is why Charlie, and I will be reading this book in our Homeschool Reading Class.

About:

A rollicking read-aloud featuring a wide cast of characters coming to the school nurse for help with their hilariously dramatic bumps, runny noses, and many other colorful complaints

Kids at Bluebell don’t feel well—
Gus is sad, and Benny fell.
Splinters, lice, a paper cut,
throw-up, bumps, a hungry gut.
Charlee’s tooth won’t wiggle free!
But there’s someone to go to—Miss Peatree!

The big feelings and minor dilemmas of elementary school are no match for this hilarious, delightful cast of characters and the untiring compassion of Miss Peatree. One after another, students pile into her office to get fixed up—whether they need a Band-Aid for a bumped knee or a solution for a touch of homesickness. Even the principal visits with an urgent paper cut!

With irresistible, hilarious rhyme and endlessly lively art, Chelsea Lin Wallace and Alison Farrell showcase the humor of elementary school’s many little problems and the gentle good sense that puts everything right.

HILARIOUS HUMOR FOR ALL AGES: This genuinely funny picture book for kids will tickle adults, too. It’s tongue-in-cheek but genuine, dramatic but keenly felt. Riddled with rhyme and chock-full of humor in every stanza, it’s a perfect read-aloud at school, at bedtime, or whenever kids need cheering up on terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days.

TIMELESS TOPIC: Classic in sensibility but with fresh, sharp wit, this book touches on a truly universal topic with an authentic voice young readers will recognize and identify with. The children’s struggles immediately capture the drama of feeling sick without being scary.

CELEBRATING SELF-CARE: In celebrating the ups and downs of potentially scary situations—feeling sick or getting injured—this book emphasizes the value of sharing emotions and seeing oneself through life’s various difficulties.

GREAT BOOK FOR CLASSROOM LIBRARY: The accessible, easy-to-read, funny text does an excellent job of getting kids to read and enjoy poetry without even noticing it. In addition to sharing this book for its fun school setting, elementary school teachers and librarians can easily use it in connection with poetry unit.

Perfect for:

  • Read-aloud option for parents, teachers, and librarians looking for funny books for kids
  • Starting-school or back-to-school book for young readers
  • Reassuring book for kids who experience sickness or struggle to get through bad days
  • Fans of humor, children’s poetry, and books that celebrate big feelings
