The Basics of a Newborn Photography

Giving way to life is a joy in itself, capturing the moments of it is a privilege. Out of all the moments in our life, the most beautiful ones are seeing our next generation grow into good humans.

Giving birth is one of the most precious moments of the life of newly become parents, and nobody would want to miss out on a chance of capturing the initial moments of their newborn. Thus, people have made this a trend to capture their newborns.

In this article, we will discuss the basics of newborn photography.

Newborn photography is an area of photography that mainly focuses on capturing newborn babies.

This is a quite common practice of parents these days, where they get captured their newborn babies through the lens of a professional photographer while assisting him in arranging props or making poses.

MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE OF CAMERA:

The first and foremost consideration in choosing a camera kit is the one that does not disturb the baby.

The babies are very sensitive to noise and light, thus, DSLRs can be a good option as per the picture quality they provide.

The other option could be mirrorless systems, they are quite good as they offer soundless capture.

WIDE OPTIONS FOR CAPTURING:

A common experience of the photographer while performing newborn photography is that babies just cannot remain still.

Babies move here and there, fall and roll, and do not stay stable in a single pose, therefore, capturing them is a huge task.

One should ensure that the camera that they use while capturing the baby has different apertures and options so that they can create the right background, using the right settings.

The camera should be efficient even in low light so that sharp and bright light does not irritate the baby, and the photo session is done successfully.

USE CREATIVITY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE:

A professional photographer would want to buy as many props as possible to make the newborn photography stand out, but the most important thing is creativity.

Using limited props with more creativity can make the photography better, rather than having a different shot of the baby with different props but with nothing innovative.

One can always keep the props very basic and simple yet elegant.

Some of the props could be blankets, towels, floppy and soft puppy pads, etc., but it is to be kept in mind that all these items are not harsh on the skin of the baby.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME TO PHOTOGRAPH:

The photographer has to deal with the babies thus, he should be aware of the habits that they tend to create at every stage of their growth.

The first two weeks of the birth of a baby offer quite beautiful moments of a baby such as curling up, holding fingers, yawning, and using their small and tender hands and feet.

Apart from this, the success of newborn photography is also based on the photographer’s knowledge of using the nap and feeding time of the baby.

The photo session should be arranged in such a manner that it does not create difficulty for the parents and the baby. Adjustments need to be made accordingly.

CREATE YOUR IDEAS BY EXPERIMENTING:

Photography is a field that is largely based on experimentation and creativity. Clients want to have something unique in their photographs making their pictures stand out.

Newborn photography can be made to stand out by using the approach of experimentation.

Experimenting with poses with a baby and creating new ideas is one thing that the photographer can do by copying and imitating some other photographers’ work as well. It

might be quite helpful for making the photo session even more innovative and fresh.

CAPTURE THE MOMENT:

An important thing that a photographer should always keep in mind is capturing the moment.

Any activity a baby does is special for their family and friends, because this ‘special’ element already exists, one should focus more on just capturing the moment.

Focusing more on the technical aspects of the props or the background may make us miss out on the beautiful activities of a baby, who is the essential part of newborn photography.

Thus, from the above points we conclude that newborn photography is not that easy or hard of a task, it depends upon how efficient a photographer is, and how much he can learn through his experiences.

Photography is a learning process, it is never stagnant. One can always learn from their own experiences as well as from others’ works.

And the foremost tip is to capture the moment. The excess use of props may steal the beauty of the click; thus, one should be able to balance the momentary activity as well as make it as aesthetic as possible.
