Valentines Day is right around the corner and for everyone its a day of love and chocolate. In our home love is one of the most important characteristics. Valentines is for chocolate, I don’t want Charlie to have to many sweets. I would rather Charlie get something he can use and always have to remind him of Valentines.
I always look for children’s books that feature Valentines in the storyline. This year Charlie and I’ve been reading a series of children’s books called Hugo The Starfish. Since there is more than one book including a Spanish book. I’ve been having trouble deciding which book I should purchase for Charlie.
The latest Hugo the Starfish book we’ve been reading is Teamwork (Hugo the Happy Starfish – Island Adventures – Educational Children’s Book Collection 11). I’m glad I chose this book because Charlie received a PS3 for Christmas.
Since Charlie received the new game system his personality has changed. Charlie is very rude and disrespectful. When Charlie plays on the PS 3 he throws temper tantrums. Especially If we ask Charlie to get off the game system for what ever reason.
Charlie will knock things over or throw things including his game controller. Or he becomes ugly with the dogs and cats we have. As well as with any of his friends who come over. This is driving me up the wall.
As a parent I realize I can’t blame all of Charlies attitude problems on the PS3 and the games he plays. Although his attitude seems to be worse when Charlie is on the PS 3. Especially if there are other boys here playing with Charlie. Charlie gets mad if they are winning and turns the game off in the middle of there game. Or when they have to go home Charlie snaps at David and I.
I am at my wits end and about ready to just sell every game system we have including my Atari I plan on purchasing for myself and every single video game that goes with both the PS3 and also his PS2. Now, I know this wouldn’t be fair to David because the PS3 is David’s and David does play the video games.
I sat down with Charlie to read Teamwork with Charlie. once I finished reading the book I had Charlie read the book to me and David so he could listen into our discussion.
Then we went through the book page by page and once we were done I had Charlie tell me what he learned through Teamwork and how what he read made him feel and how he could change his attitude.
I’m glad I did because Charlie went to his friends Trey’s home this weekend. They let Charlie spend the night. Heidi Trey’s mom say’s Charlie was so good. Charlie even told Cinnamon and Trey about Teamwork and what he learned.
If I were a teacher or day care worker or just a parent Hugo the Starfish Teamwork- The Island of Cooperation is something I would always have in my home. Not only for the children but I can refer to The Island of Cooperation because even adults have off days. There are times when I need to be reminded to use cooperation and to walk away as well as pick my battles.
If I can teach my family how to get along better by sharing Teamwork then I am all for it. To me this new children’s book is the perfect gift for every child on your gift giving list.
Charlie was so impressed with Teamwork that he took out his art supplies and we had a day were we drew our own Starfish and had our Starfish learning and doing different things that we turned into a book.
If I were homeschooling Charlie still Teamwork would have made a perfect book for us to use for our art class. I would like to share something that happened which totally surprised me. David even sat down with us at the kitchen table and did some of the drawings with us which was fun as David dosent normally do these things with us.
Once my new Nephew Jason is born I will make sure he has all of the Hugo the Starfish books in his nursery as these are books he can hand down to his own children and they will allow my nephew to bring Jason up with the right attitude and morals.
