Did you know you can teach Preschool at home, and I would like to help you get started teaching your Preschooler at home. Before you ask no, I don’t have any preschoolers, but I do have nieces and nephews who weren’t able to go to school this year. Because their Birthday was later in the year. Being there Aunt I want them to know everything they need to know before kindergarten next year. So come join me on our journey of teaching a Preschooler and a 4th grader.
As we begin our journey, I would like to share with you two pieces of advice and the first one is that the early years are the most critical learning years and set the stage for all future learning. The second piece of advice is being a parent makes us our children’s first teacher. When Charlie was little, I registered him at our Rec for Preschool as his Birthday was in December and he had to begin school late. Now, you may ask why I registered him in school, and I didn’t teach him, and it was because I didn’t know I could teach him at home. But through friends and other bloggers now I know I can.
This morning before you begin teaching you will need an ideal of what you want to teach your child, and this can change at any time as each child is different and they will learn if different ways. If one thing isn’t working out don’t feel bad if you have to scrap that plan and come up with a new plan to teach your child.
For a preschooler don’t try and teach them to much or they will become overwhelmed and not want to learn at all. I would spend about a hour a day and throw in plenty of time for games and crafts as children can learn by using these methods and will not ever realize they are learning they will just think they are playing.
As your planning school make sure you set times for Breakfast and Lunch as well as a nap and leave plenty of time for them to help. Because by helping you prepare lunch or doing chores they will be learning, and it is school in a new and unique way. If you’re doing laundry let them help sort the clothes as this teaches them colors. Or if you’re having items which need cut up for lunch let them help you cut the items and ask them to cut them in certain shapes by allowing them to help, they will help the different shapes.
Once you’re ready to begin to teach your child make sure you have the items you need in your classroom and I would suggest you get your child involved in picking out the items for your classroom as this will build there interest and they will want to learn. If there is room in your home or it can even be outside if you want to teach outside which I will be doing sometimes find a child sized table, chairs, and bookshelves if possible. Now, you don’t have to purchase new furniture as you can watch garage sales and kids’ resales shops and find these items here for next to nothing.
In your home classroom you will want to have children’s books, art supplies, educational games, blocks, and other toys available that promote fine motor skills, dramatic play, and other learning opportunities through play. I would suggest the items your using in your classroom be kept separate from the items your children play with on a daily basis.
Set a schedule both you and your child are comfortable with. Make sure to get them up at the same time each day and start school at the same time so they get used to it. I have decided we will start school at 9 here and we have breakfast together at 8 and then we load the dishwasher and I have Payton help me and as we load it, we count how many items are being put in and we do this in lots of 5. Once we are done, we venture to the couch for reading time and we watch Cartons for 3o minutes once we finish reading and as we are watching cartoons Payton and I use her blocks and build, or we color and talk about what we are watching on television.
Once the show is over and we have picked up all the block and discussed the colors and shapes we use we move on to writing Payton’s name. Then we color something with our color of the week and go over the shape we are learning that week. Then we get out our calendar and go over the day of the week as well as the month.
By this time, it is time for lunch, so we venture into the kitchen and Payton helps me make lunch and clean up. Then it’s off to take a nap and I read to her again. Once she wakes up, I pop in a DVD, and I pick one with songs or something we are learning that week. Once it is over, we head outside to play and as we are playing, I have her look for things we learned that day.
Once we return back inside our school day is over and Payton is off to play, and I go to work. Before bed that night I read another book to her, and we discuss our day and she shared with her parents what she learned that day. So, as you can see there is learning at every opportunity if you take the time to look for it.
If you have other suggestions for us, please leave me a comment. Or if you have questions, please leave me a comment and I will do my best to answer them. As Preschool is brand new to me and I know I will make mistakes, but I will do my best to make sure Payton is happy, safe and learns something each day.
Here are a few items Payton and I picked up for our classroom and each week we will add one or two new items. If you have a Dollar Tree or Green Back near you, I suggest you start there as they have workbooks, crafts and art Supplies for only a $1.00. If not once again watch Garage Sales.
