I was looking around the house I picked up another cookbook from David’s mom. Taste of Home: The Best of Country Cooking. Living in Haltom City, Texas a suburb of Fort Worth/ Dallas, Texas we know a lot about Southern dishes which is COUNTRY COOKING at it’s best.
We grew up watching our parents and grandparents cooking Sunday dinner. You would hear a pinch of this and smidgen of that. Teaching Charlie to cook for his Homeschool Cooking Class has been hard because I grew up not using measuring cups.
I just pour things into pots and stir and taste until things work out. Which doesn’t always happen but it is fun to experiment. Not only am I having to teach Charlie to cook but to retrain myself as well. As for David he does follow directions for the most part unless its something I’ve taught him to cook.
Which is why I couldn’t wait to sit down and browse through The Best of Country Cooking. As I did I found recipes Charlie hadn’t had the opportunity to try that took me back to my childhood. I bet if you were to check out this cookbook you would find recipes you grew up on as well.
I can’t wait to have Charlie prepare Oven-Fried Chicken Drumsticks which is healthier than frying Chicken the way I grew up. We can host a cooking contest and see whose Chicken is better but if you ask me nothing can beat my dad’s.. He was the best cook ever. Throw in my moms Potato Salad which was so good you would want to slap yo mama.
I was disappointed to find out there wasn’t a recipe for Chicken Fried Steak a true Southern meal. Although, I have my own recipe which I make that came from Wyatt’s Cafeteria which has closed and let me tell you I miss there cooking more than anything.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
