I wanted to share a new children’s book with you called Susie Clark The Bravest Hirl You’ve Ever Seen by Joshalyn Hickey-Johnson (Author), Hayle Calvin (Illustrator)I received in exchange for this review. If Charlie and I were still #Homeschooling full time we would have used Susie Clark The Bravest Hirl You’ve Ever Seen in our History Class when we were studying the Civil War and even if your not #Homeshooling your students you should check out this picture book because not only will children learn from the pictures and stories so will adults.
The book shares Susan Clark’s story of them overcoming barriers to equal barriers. When I opened my book there was the cutest little sticker in the book which I’ve put on my desk to remind me of what people went through back then. The story takes place in Muscatine, Iowa and Charlie and I looked it up to see if it was a real City and low and behold it was.
About the book:
Susan Clark was just 13 when she became the first Black student in the United States to integrate a public school through a court order. Her lawsuit, decided by the Iowa Supreme Court in 1868, gave all Iowa children the right to attend public school regardless of race, religion, nationality, or any other distinction. Segregated schools were the norm in many States until the 1954 US Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. Susan’s case contributed to that landmark decision.
Thank you,
Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
