Study Tips for Back to School

Again this year the set up for school has been changed and will continue to change with the ongoing Pandemic. As parents, its your responsibility to help your child cope and even continue to enjoy learning.

But sometimes getting your child to study can be a challenging task. No matter the level your child is in, these steps are helpful to teach him to be able to successfully have study time and minimize stress on your end.

Tip #1: Help your child develop organizational systems that will work. Not all organizational systems will work for all students. Help your child choose the ones that will work best with their schedule and needs.

Remember, though, that learning to be organized takes time and practice. If a system doesn’t work the first time, teach your child to try again. Sometimes a little bit more time is needed to become accustomed to an organized system. After all, systems make things easy.

Tip #2: Schedule time to complete assignments based on anticipated time on task and urgency. Teach your child to take note of all the assignments that need to be completed, determine their deadlines, and estimate how long it will take to finish each one, from here prioritize the tasks and together, set a clear schedule for completing them!

Tip #3: Create and save study guides and aids. Students often wait until the night before big tests to start creating study aids. Instead, you should help your child create study aids for each quiz and test that he has in a class.

Once the quizzes and tests are completed, the study guides should be saved. Then when it comes time to study for the big tests and quizzes, the study aids are already created and available, which saves valuable time that can be dedicated to studying.

Tip #4: Learn how to effectively communicate with the teachers. Teachers are there to provide guidance and support. You’ll find that most of your child’s teachers are more than happy to provide additional instruction and extra help.

Teaching your child to communicate effectively with the teachers will show how much he values his academic performance. The teachers always want to see that he is interested in the class material and that he is driven to succeed.

There’s a good chance that a portion of his grades will be based on your class participation. By effectively communicating with the teachers, your child can help maintain and increase his class grades.

Tip #5: Reward your child for a job well done! Positive reinforcement is an amazing thing. When your child completes tasks, reward him in small ways. This can be anything from allowing him to take a 10-minute break to treat him to a movie. This will help to avoid procrastination!

Studying need not be boring! With the right system in place coupled with your patience, your child will surely excel in class (whether physical or virtual) and will be on his way to achieve his dreams! Happy study time to you and your little one!
