Recommended Website: The Great Chicago Fire
Age Range: 8-18 (Grades 3-12, with parental supervision) This site, sponsored by the Chicago Historical Society and Northwestern University, provides a very in-depth look at the Great Chicago Fire. The fire began on October 8, 1871, and by the time it was finally brought under control on October 10, 1871, more than three square miles of the city was destroyed claiming up to 300 lives and leaving one hundred thousand people homeless.
When you get to the site, you can read the introduction, then choose from the two main parts: The Great Chicago Fire or the Web of Memory. In The Great Chicago Fire section, you can read first-hand articles with images on the following topics:
