As we celebrate Women’s Small Business Month this October, meet Shandra Scruggs, the visionary behind Simply Birthed, an innovative pregnancy concierge app disrupting women’s healthcare space.
Simply Birthed was born from Shandra’s deep passion for maternal and infant health. As a licensed labor and delivery nurse and registered doula, she recognized the need for accessible, evidence-based resources for expectant parents. Her background played a pivotal role in shaping the app’s development.
Connecting users with experienced doulas, nurses, and midwives, what sets Simply Birthed apart is Shandra’s deep understanding of the clinical, emotional, and psychological aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, addressing the overlooked needs of pregnant individuals and their families. She says, “I have created a space where mothers can access comprehensive and user-friendly resources to bridge the gap between the clinical and emotional aspects of childbirth, using a holistic approach to pregnancy support within the app. By combining my medical expertise with technology, Simply Birthed offers a platform that educates expectant parents while fostering a sense of community.”
As a female founder in the tech and healthcare sectors, Shandra faced funding hurdles and industry biases. She says, “I had to rely on crowdfunding and donations due to limited access to venture capital. Building a supportive community was crucial to convince people of the app’s value.” With resilience and her commitment to maternal health, she triumphed.
Simply Birthed prioritizes inclusivity by offering services in multiple languages and collaborating with diverse healthcare professionals. Shandra says, “We designed our app to be affordable, with plans starting at just $10 per month, making our resources accessible. Secondly, we prioritize evidence-based information and culturally sensitive content, acknowledging the diverse backgrounds and needs of our users.”
Shandra’s journey highlights the vital role women entrepreneurs play in driving innovation. “We’ve also collaborated with other women entrepreneurs and organizations dedicated to maternal and infant health, expanding our impact.”
