While academic achievement isn’t necessarily the be-all and end-all of success, it can certainly help a developing person find more pathways open to them. This is especially true for your children. It might be that you found little value in your schooling years, but taking that attitude and bringing it to your children can often be harmful. Children should feel supported in their educational environment and in how you support them with it, because after all, there’s much more to the schooling process than simply gaining good grades. Social development, time management, punctuality and etiquette all play a big role, and even those hardly cover the full benefits a child attending school can receive.
So, in this upcoming period of school exams, we would like to sit back and consider how you can best set up your children for educational success. You might just be surprised at the conclusions drawn here, and find a positive and helpful path through to giving your children the support they truly deserve:
Encouragement
The most important thing to give is encouragement. This is because whenever a child engages with their education, they can easily be veered off course. Perhaps a science teacher in middle school couldn’t control the class or had a mean streak, and now your child feels a lack of enthusiasm for that subject, despite previously enjoying it. A little encouragement can go a long way. If they’re struggling, it can also be important not to criticize them, or worse yet, compare them to another one of your children. Encouragement always. You must always help them believe that they can try, and that challenges are not permanent obstacles. This can help them find value even if finding it hard to grasp a concept. This will also show them that education is a mindset and attitude, not just something forced upon them in a schooling environment.
Better Schools
It seems to be the trend lately for more and more people to criticize schooling. When in reality, one bad school does not suggest that as the norm. There are many excellent schools out there, completely worth their presence, and it can sometimes be worthwhile to find them. You might choose the next pathway from moving schools to be a natural jump, such as heading from middle to high school. You might wish to go a little further afield, hopefully finding a place with much more encouragement, a higher OFSTED score, or a place renowned for a certain specialism. You might wish for all of this excellence, and also an environment perfect for your child, such as the wonderful Leicester High School for Girls. A great school can help your child develop, truly, and so it’s best not to dismiss it, but to improve where they attend.
Help Them Keep Their Head Above Water
When the GCSE’s and higher qualifications start coming around, it’s often the case that they can feel a little overwhelmed. Show them the benefits of good time planning and organization. Ensure they keep on top of their work. In other words, ensuring you keep household homework discipline to a gold standard can ensure that they don’t dread going to school in the morning, and instead feel on top of things. But remember, don’t place too high expectations on them, or you might have the reverse effect.
With these tips, we hope your child enjoys every success in their schooling efforts.
