Any parent knows that spills and stains are an inevitable part of life with a new baby. “Finding easy, safe cleaning hacks for nursery furniture can be a headache,” says Annalisa Thomas of Oilo Studio, a luxury brand specializing in nursery decor.

From milk dribbles on furniture to food stains on fabrics, caring for a baby means constantly battling messes. Here, Annalisa reveals her most effective hacks to tackle common baby stains and keep your nursery items clean and pristine.

Tackle Fresh Stains With Water

Right after a spill, blot the area with a wet rag or towel. Make sure to dab at the stain rather than scrubbing, as scrubbing will just spread the stain. Dab until the stain is nearly gone, then scrub gently to remove the rest of the color and leave the area to dry. Repeat if necessary to remove the stain altogether.

“If there are any chunks – say, if you’ve spilled food – make sure to pick them up first before dabbing,” advises Annalisa. “Only use cold water, as hot water can lock the stain in. For stubborn stains, add a few drops of white vinegar or a teaspoon of laundry detergent to help the process along.”

For Set-In Stains, Let Solutions Soak

If there’s no time to clean a stain right away, it can become harder to remove. To deal with it, let a mixture of either white vinegar and water or detergent and water sit on the stain for 10 minutes.

Waiting allows the mixture to really soak into the fabric and break the chemical bonds that have formed between the food particles and the fabric. This makes it much easier to remove the stain when blotting the mixture away after the 10 minutes are up.

Upholstery Cleaners For Stubborn Spots

For stains that just won’t shift, using an upholstery cleaner can work wonders on fabric surfaces throughout the nursery. Scrub a generous amount of the cleaner into the stain, then dab with a wet cloth.

“Different products will have specific instructions, so it’s best to follow what’s written on the back of the bottle,” advises Annalisa.

Employ Steam For A Deep Clean

Steam cleaners heat water until it boils, turning it into steam, which is then directed through a nozzle or brush. When the attachment is run over a fabric surface, the concentrated steam breaks down dirt while also killing bacteria.

“Steam cleaners are easy to use and perfect for a really deep clean,” says Annalisa.

Annalisa Thomas of Oilo Studio commented:

“Before cleaning any furniture in your nursery, you must pay attention to the materials an item is made from. For example, a steam cleaner works wonders on carpets and upholstery but can severely damage wallpaper. Different cleaning products are formulated for different fabrics, while polishes are usually designed for a specific type of wood or metal. Using products without checking can damage your precious nursery furniture, which is heartbreaking when you’ve put so much effort into creating the perfect space.

“The key to keeping nursery furniture in good condition is maintenance. As well as cleaning stains as soon as possible, you should aim to vacuum once a week, including your upholstery. Dusting and wiping down surfaces at least once a week is also highly preferable. Polishing and treating wooden or metal surfaces should be done according to the specific material to preserve their condition.”
