Charlie and I are finishing our venture of reading the books about Raggedy Ann, so this morning I wanted to bring you the latest one we have been reading and to ask if you have read it or not? Raggedy Ann’s Wishing Pebble – Written and Illustrated by Johnny Gruelle as soon as Charlie saw the title he wanted to sit down and read the story as he wanted to know what a Wishing Pebble was and if it worked.
Because Charlie and I both have some wishes, we would like to see fulfilled sooner than later. Once Charlie opened up the book and saw the illustrations he became lost in the story, and I didn’t hear from him until he finished reading the book on his own without any help from me. With Charlie doing this I knew he enjoyed the story and that it would be a book I would purchase to keep in our home library.
‘Raggedy Ann’s Wishing Pebble’ is written and illustrated by Johnny Gruelle. Gruelle (1880 – 1930), was an American artist and political cartoonist, as well as a children’s book illustrator and author. The books of ‘The Raggedy Ann Series’ all feature their central protagonist, with red yarn for hair and a triangle nose – charting her considerable adventures. Gruelle created Raggedy Ann for his daughter, Marcella, when she brought him an old hand-made rag doll. He drew a face on it, and from his bookshelf, pulled a book of poems by James Whitcomb Riley, combining the names of two poems, ‘The Raggedy Man’ and ‘Little Orphan Annie.’ From this moment on, the much-loved children’s series went from strength to strength. Sought after by collectors, this reprinted edition showcases Gruelle’s original text, further enhanced by his beautiful color drawings, so that the two may be fully appreciated by young and old alike.
