Charlie has been wanting a Bull Dog puppy forever and David has told him this year when income tax comes in that he will get Charlie one. So I let Charlie know be would need to learn how to potty train the puppy so when we bring him him he is trained. So this morning I thought we would share the tips Charlie is using with you.
Puppy potty training for absolute newbies
Potty training is the first thing that your dog will learn. It is somewhat normal given that your puppy will almost immediately start relieving itself on your carpet or floor.
The potty-training specialist Lene Kaufmann teaches that potty training is a process that is both hygienic and bonding.
In fact, it goes hand in hand with regular walks so puppy will also have the opportunity to get some air and you with him.
Now, let’s briefly go over the most important tips and explain them.
Do everything with love!
Like any other training, it is necessary for dog to feel that it is loved. It is in fact part of the process. Any kind of a punishment should be avoided as something that only alienate owner from his pet. Instead, focus on petting when a puppy does something correctly. You need to enforce positive stimulation as a wanted behavior.
Patience and persistence are virtues.
Dog doesn’t understand potty training, it doesn’t understand why it should pee outside of the house nor does it care. This is where you come in as a teacher. Keep in mind that accidents will happen and are in fact expected. You need to be cool-headed in these situations and behave as an adult. Everything that you do should be based on your initiative. After doing it each and every day for a longer period of time, dog will start coming to you when it needs to pee seeing you as a facilitator and knowing that you’re the one that can help him.
There should be only one master.
Although puppy can be pet of the whole family, it is much better when only one person does a training (regardless of a type of training). This establishes that one person as a master. This is very important as dogs are pack animals and have hierarchy. Same way they would see pack leader, they need to see you. If there are too many people taking care of the dog, message is diluted, and he will not have the same amount of respect for everyone. In fact, it may become stubborn and independent which can pose a problem.
Dogs require a lot of attention
Pottying and frequent walks are one of the main reasons why dog owners decide to abandon their dog. Not only is this a really exhausting, it also takes a lot of time. Most dogs require around 5 walks per day. The number increases as the size of the animal decreases. Dogs need to go in the morning and in the evening, after waking up and prior to going to sleep. They are similar to us, and their bladders fill during the night, so they need to be empty before and after it.
Dogs have strong sense of smell.
Sense of smell is used for practically everything among other for pottying. Dog will remember its surroundings and the place where it frequently pees and poos. This will become his go to place. Make sure he always has something similar to rely, at least similar surface.
Meals can pose a problem.
Any changes in diet can lead to accidents and even stomach issues. Your puppy needs to be fed one and the same food at first. You should also provide same sized meals at the same time of the day. If the dog doesn’t finish the meal, remove it. By behaving in this way, you are ensuring that there are no mishaps along the way.
There you go! With these simple rules, you are on your way of mastering potty training. I’m sure your dog will be grateful and that you’ll create a good, strong bond with him.
Thank you,
