Once on This Island

The Mommies Reviews

Last week David, Charlie and I attended a Musical at The Firehouse Theatre. We saw the musical Once on This Island. I would like to let you know Once on This Island is one toe tapping musical that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I wanted to see Once On This Island because The Tony Award winning musical is an adaptation of The Little Mermaid. I let Charlie and David know these they couldn’t wait to get to the Firehouse Theatre.

Once On This Island begin and the started to tell the story and to sing Charlie didn’t move at all. Charlie was totally memorized just as I was. I can tell you both Charlie and I wanted to get up and dance because the Music in
Once On This Island was so catchy.

I thought Charlie might get bored with Once On This Island because this had Romance but Charlie didn’t. What surprised me was Charlie let me know he wouldn’t mind seeing Once on This Island again

On the way home Charlie was even humming and singing the songs from Once on This Island. I can tell you if we were still Homeschooling full time Once on This Island would make a wonderful lesson plan we could use in our Art Class and also our Music Class.

Charlie even let me know he liked the decorations and the clothes everyone were wearing. On the way home Charlie asked me if we could purchase a couple shirts like the gentleman had on for him.

Charlie say’s he would like to have a shirt like they have on.

DALLAS, Texas – March 8, 2019 – The Firehouse Theatre will present Ahrens &Flaherty’s Once on This Island March 29 – April 14, 2019. Winner of the 2018 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, this Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid celebrates storytelling with a Calypso-flavored tale of one small girl who finds love in a world of prejudice.

Once on This Island

In the PG-rated musical, a peasant girl rescues a wealthy boy from the other side of the island and falls in love with him, but is shunned by his people due to her low social status. She pays the ultimate price for loving him, but the gods have something special in store for her sacrifice.

“In today’s social climate, at a time when our politics and headlines challenge us with building literal walls around our borders, this story feels more relevant than ever,” states Once on This Island director Marilyn Setu.

The Firehouse Theatre has not only hired a diverse cast to tell this story, but also brought on a leadership team consisting of All People of Color to tell a story which on the surface, is about colonization, class, and colorism.

At its core, Once on This Island is a story of a love that conquers all. It is a story of a young woman who fights and endures the ultimate sacrifice to make the world a better and more inclusive place. We are extremely proud of the diverse cast we have assembled to tell this beautiful story.”

For me personally I would like to return to The Firehouse Theater to watch Mama Mia and The Wizard of Oz along with Cats. I asked David what he would like to return and see and he said Oswald.

In 2011, a community group with a strong desire to promote and support theatre arts met together and founded The Farmers Branch Community Theatre. The founding committee began searching for possible performance venues and identified historic Fire Station #1 as the ideal location.

Built in 1958, the facility served the city for over 50 years, but by 2011 larger fire and medical equipment, combined with new procedures and technology, overwhelmed the structure and lot size.

In 2012, Fire Station #1 was relocated to a new, larger, state-of-the art facility to continue protecting and serving the citizens of Farmers Branch. Working in partnership, the City of Farmers Branch entered into a multi-year agreement with The Farmers Branch Community Theatre, dba The Firehouse Theatre, for management and use of the city-owned property.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
