October 5th is National Apple Betty Day #AppleBettyDay and David is working later than usual this evening. I was thinking about making a dessert of some kind to surprise David with. Then I found out today was Apple Betty Day which I’ve never had I thought I could make this for us and also make one for David’s dad.
If you were #Homeschooling your children you could gather everyone up and go to a Apple Farm and pick the Apples you will need to make a Apple Brown Betty or even take a #FieldTrip to the local Grocery Store and pick up different types of Apples to use to make Apple Betty. Then ask your family and friends to vote on each one.
October 5th is National Apple Betty Day, and we’re here to celebrate! Before we begin you may be wondering, what exactly is an Apple Betty? Which is the same thing as an Apple Crisp although we will break it down for you so that you can whip up a delicious dish in time for National Apple Betty Day.
An Apple Betty is a classic dessert made of layers of sliced Apples topped with a layer of Buttery Crumble, made out of Flour or Cracker Crumbs. Did you know the origin of the name “Betty” remains a mystery, but Apple Betty has been around since colonial times. Brown Betty was popularized in the 19th Century when cookbooks began offering recipes for brown Betty.
The taste and texture are similar to that of an Apple Crisp, but there are some key differences between them. While an Apple Crisp usually contains Oats or other Grains mixed into its topping, an Apple Betty does not include any additional Grains. Also, an Apple Crisp usually calls for more Sugar and Butter than an Apple Betty does.
Customizing Your Apple Betty
Here is something I bet you didn’t think about when preparing your Apple Betty you can personalize your own recipe by swapping out ingredients and adding Cinnamon or Nutmeg to the Apples or choosing different types of Breadcrumbs or Cracker Crumbs to top off your dish.
Did you know an Apple Betty goes good with Ice Cream or Whipped Cream. Take the time today and get creative and create your own Apple Betty. Whether you choose to make a classic version or experiment with unique ingredients, this traditional dessert will be sure to delight your friends and family alike.
