National Quilting Day 2020

The Mommies Reviews

Finding out that today is National Quilting Day 2020 March 21, 2020 in the USA makes me miss my grandmother Dorie so much. She used to make Quilts for our family.

This looks like the Dutch Boy Quilt my grandmother made when I was a child.

I was blessed and had two of them. One was one I got when I graduated from High School. Unfortunately both of the quilts wore out and I don’t have them. I don’t even have pictures of them.

What I do remember is sitting with my grandmother and cutting out squares and hand sewing a lap quilt for my grandfather who was in a Nursing Home. I wish I knew what happened to his quilt.

Our neighbor and my grannies best friend Alma had Quilting Rings set up in her living room and her and her sister Florence would make and sell quilts.

Every time I go to a Craft Show I look at the quilts and they take me back to my grandmothers living room and as much as I would like to purchase a quilt I can never afford them.

I guess its time I purchase material and make me a square and cut out the blocks and make a quilt for my bed. I could use a Sewing Machine if anyone wants to be nice enough and purchase one for me.

If not I will hand sew the quilt and find someone to go back over it with a Sewing Machine it will last longer. I could even see my sister Charlie and my sister helping me with the quilt.

National Quilting Day is observed on March 21, 2020. It celebrates quilts and those who make them annually on the third Saturday in March. The National Quilting Association started National Quilting Day in 1991. Their members passed a resolution in Lincoln, Nebraska, on June 1991.

A quilt is a type of bed cover, traditionally composed of 3 layers of fiber: a woven cloth top, a layer of batting or wadding and a woven back, combined using the technique of quilting. A quilt is distinguishable from other types of blankets because it is pieced together with several pieces of cloth. “Quilting” refers to the technique of joining at least two fabric layers by stitches or ties.
