Its funny the things we remember from our childhoods. But as soon as I saw Food Holidays: April 17th, 2021. My mind went back to when my brother was in High School.

Gerald took Home Economics and one of the things he learned to make was a Pie Crust and Cherry Pie no, it wasn’t a Cobbler but if he could make a Pie that impressed my parents then I bet you Gerald could also have made a Cherry Cobbler if he put his mind to it.

National Cherry Cobbler Day celebrates Cherry cobbler a baked dessert made with a rich fruit filling and a biscuit dough crust. Back in the 19th century, pioneers of the American West had to adapt many recipes because of a severe lack of ingredients. The traditional pie evolved into the cobbler, which was often served as the main dish of the meal!

No one knows how Cobblers got their name, but there are several theories. One source suggests that the word “Cobbler” evolved from “cCobeler,” which was a specific type of wooden bowl used in cooking. Other culinary historians believe the name may have been inspired by the dessert’s resemblance to a cobblestone.

Now, lets celebrate National Cherry Cobbler Day, and bake our own delicious Cherry Cobbler and serve this as the main course for dinner tonight!

Although, Charlie and I would prefer something else for Dessert because neither of us like Cherry Cobbler. But I think David does and Charlie could make one in his Homeschool Cooking Class for David and his grandfather who loves Cherry Cobbler.

  1. A cobbler is a deep dish made in a (casserole or soufflé dish). Or a Fruit Pie. Did you know (peach is the most common Cobbler ) with only a top biscuit dough crust.
  2. Fruit cobblers can be made with almost any fruit, singly or in combination.
  3. Cobblers takes there name from the biscuit dough crust on top – because they are rough looking or ‘cobbled.’ Cobblers originated in the U.S. sometime in the early to mid 19th century.
  4. Here is a fun fact?: A Cobbler is also a drink, which probably predates the Fruit Cobbler pie.
  5. A Cobbler usually consisted of Whiskey or Rum with Fruit Juice and/or Sugar, garnished with Mint and/or Citrus

Recipe:

½ cup butter

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup white sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 cup milk

1 (21 ounce) can cherry pie filling

Directions

  • Step 1 Preheat oven to 275 degrees F (135 degrees C). Place butter or margarine in a 9×13 inch baking dish and set on oven rack to melt.
  • Step 2 In a medium bowl, mix together flour, sugar, and baking powder. Stir in milk.
  • Step 3 Remove baking dish from oven as soon as butter or margarine is melted. Pour flour mixture into dish, but DO NOT STIR. Pour fruit evenly into pan, and DO NOT STIR.
  • Step 4 Raise oven temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Bake cobbler for 50 to 60 minutes, until golden brown.
