My Favourite 5 Canary Islands- A Personal Journey

The Mommies Reviews

The Canary Islands have always been my go-to destination when I need a mix of sun, adventure, and relaxation. Each of the islands has its own character, but if I had to pick my top five, these would be my favourites.

1. Gran Canaria – The Island That Has It All

If there’s one island that truly steals my heart, it’s Gran Canaria. Nicknamed “the continent in miniature,” it offers an incredible variety of landscapes—from golden dunes to lush green mountains.

The climate is perfect all year round, with mild winters and warm summers. No matter when you visit, you’re almost guaranteed sunshine.

The beaches are spectacular. My personal favourite is Maspalomas, with its rolling sand dunes that make you feel like you’re in the Sahara. For something livelier, Playa del Inglés is a great spot, while Puerto de Mogán offers a charming marina setting.

But Gran Canaria is more than just beaches. Gran Canaria is full of things to see and do. Hike up Roque Nublo for breathtaking views, explore the vibrant capital Las Palmas, or take a scenic drive through the Barranco de Guayadeque, a beautiful ravine dotted with cave houses and fantastic restaurants.

2. Tenerife – The Island of Contrasts

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and home to Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak. This island is a paradise for nature lovers, with everything from black volcanic beaches to lush forests in the Anaga Mountains.

The climate here is similar to Gran Canaria’s—warm all year round—but there’s a distinct difference between the north and south. The south is sunnier and drier, while the north is greener and cooler.

For beach lovers, Playa de las Teresitas, with its golden sand imported from the Sahara, is a must-visit. If you love adventure, hiking up Mount Teide or exploring the Masca Valley will leave you speechless.

3. Lanzarote – A Volcanic Wonderland

Lanzarote feels like another planet. The landscape is dramatic, shaped by volcanic eruptions, with black lava fields, red craters, and unique rock formations.

The climate is fantastic, with hardly any rain and plenty of sunshine, making it perfect for exploring all year round.

The beaches here are stunning, from the white sands of Playa Blanca to the surreal beauty of Playa de Papagayo. And then there’s Timanfaya National Park, where you can witness geothermal activity and even have your food cooked using volcanic heat!

4. La Palma – The Green Island

If you love nature, La Palma is a dream. Known as “La Isla Bonita” (The Beautiful Island), it’s covered in lush forests, deep gorges, and breathtaking viewpoints.

The climate is a bit cooler than the other islands, but still mild compared to mainland Europe. There’s a mix of sunshine and occasional misty days, which add to the island’s mystical atmosphere.

The beaches are mostly black sand, with some hidden gems like Playa de Nogales, perfect for those who love dramatic coastal scenery. The real highlight of La Palma, though, is its hiking trails—especially the route through Caldera de Taburiente National Park.

5. Fuerteventura – A Beach Lover’s Paradise

If endless golden beaches are your idea of heaven, Fuerteventura is the island for you. It has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Canary Islands, with crystal-clear waters and dunes stretching for miles.

The climate is dry, warm, and sunny all year round, making it a perfect beach destination no matter the season.

The best beaches include Corralejo, with its rolling sand dunes, and Cofete, a wild, untouched paradise. If you love watersports, Fuerteventura is also the best place for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.

Each of these Canary Islands offers something unique, but for me, Gran Canaria will always be number one. Whether you’re after adventure, relaxation, or just a break from daily life, the Canary Islands never disappoint.

Which one is your favourite?
