Molly & Nightmare

Children's Book Reviews The Mommies Reviews

Good evening as the weekend comes to an end and a new week of school for Charlie, I wanted to share a new children’s book from Pow! with you. Molly & Nightmare written by Shannon Avra and Illustrated by David Spencer in exchange for this review.

Lots of little children are afraid of Monsters in the closet or under there bed but none of my children ever had this problem. Did your children? Although when my niece Lily was little, she was afraid of Monsters. I believe if her parents had known about Molly & Nightmare and saw how the Monster and Molly became friends, she wouldn’t have been scared but we didn’t know about the book back then.

Charlie and I sat down together this evening and read the book and before we finished the story Charlie let me know he wanted to let his sister Leslie borrow the book to read to her son Elijah who will be 8 soon. Charlie wanted me to let you know he thinks Molly & Nightmare is for little children. Although adults and even teens would like the story if they sat down and read the book. Then they might want to find a Monster to be their friend as well.

I don’t know about you but I’m not sure I would want a Monster although my daughter Suzzane wanted a Hippocampus from the Christmas Song. So if she was here and had a chance and the Monster was cute, she might have wanted one as well and I asked David and Charlie and they also said it could be nice to have a Monster to do things with their friends was busy.

Could you imagine taking a one eyed green furry Monster to school for show and tell? Do you think the Monster would scare the children? Charlie and I enjoyed learning about what a Monster can and can’t do and even though we called for one none appeared. Would you see if you can call a Monster and give it to us Charlie said.

Charlie liked finding out Molly thought Monsters were brave and adventures as he has been wanting to go on new adventures. Would you like to go with them? The Monster reminded Molly he is supposed to scare her which she wasn’t scared. But Charlie and I think we might have been. How about you?

Charlie enjoyed learning what Molly was afraid of which was Snapping Turtles Charlie said he wouldn’t be afraid of. But I might be. How about you? Molly reminded the Monster he was being unkind and named him Fred. If he was my Monster I would call him George while Charlie said he liked Fred. How about you. What would you name your Monster and why?

Molly puts the Monster to bed under her bed and covers him up and if you want to know what happens next you will need to pick up a copy of Molly & Nightmare because Charlie and I are off to call our own Monster. If your children are afraid of Monsters, they do not have to be afraid of Fred because he is a nice Monster. Just ask Moll

Parents you should prepare your children that in the book Molly does pass away but the Monster makes a new friend, and the story continues but it is sad and they may end up crying like I did. As for Charlie as tough as he is I almost saw him crying as well as his dad but that didn’t stop us from falling in love with the book and reading it over and over and using it in our Homeschool Reading Arts Class.
