Mighty Big And Super Great: “Texas Is The Lone Star State”!

For those that don’t know it, I reside in Dallas/ Fort Worth so as soon as I received the press release for Might Big And Super Great: “Texas Is The Lone Star State” I knew it would be a book Charlie and his friends would enjoy. All I didn’t realize was all the learning opportunities we would have when reading this new book.

I shared it with David and Charlie I sat down to read it to see if I thought Charlie would be able to on his own. As I read through it, I knew it would push Charlie but allow him to learn new words and how to sound them out. When reading this new book, Charlie would have to go slow and pay close attention to what he was reading and not be able to bounce up and down.

I also could see it leading to lots of questions which we could turn into lesson plans for our Homeschool. So while Charlie was outside, I read the book to David and even shared the song in the back of the book with David. As we finished it, he had a lot of questions he thought would make perfect lesson plans for Charlie. As well as Field Trips we can attend this Summer.

So for David and I, this new book was a huge hit all I had to do share it with Charlie and see what he thought about it. So I had it inside his Easter Basket when he got up yesterday. Once Charlie saw the new book he sat right down to read it, and we had fun looking up the people mentioned in the book and answering the questions in the back of the book.

Charlie has even mentioned he wants to learn about several things they said in the book and that he wants to share it with his friend Bradley next door. When we were at the grocery store last night, Charlie even asked me if he could make a Frito Pie in the book which allowed Charlie to cook for school.

When we decided to go outside this morning, Charlie asked if we could take the chalk he had gotten for Christmas along with the book as he wanted to draw some of the items he saw in the book. We finished Charlie, and I sat down under the tree and discussed why he thought the Author had written this new book and it was so much fun to hear his thoughts.

Reviews for Mighty Big and Super Great: Texas is the “Lone Star State”!:

Kirkus Reviews: “In this debut picture book, Manning sets out to educate young readers about the history and commerce of her home state. Beginning with the Alamo, this work examines important Texas historical events and figures and supplies snippets about the state’s nickname, flag, flower and major industries.”

Reader’s Favorite: “Mighty Big and Super Great: Texas Is The ‘Lone Star State’!” by Amber Manning is first and foremost a beautiful book which introduces children to a story about history which is written in verse and is rhyming. Or you can sing it! An example: “Fight, fight, win!! / In 1836, we begin / At the Battle of San Jacinto, / In remembrance of the Alamo.” The text is as appealing as the illustrations. They both convey a sense of courage, bravery, adventure, and history. What more could we ask from a history book for young children? It is enthusiastic and fascinating. This captivating “story” is as entertaining as it is enlightening; what’s more, it is as beautiful as it is useful, and that is why I highly recommend it.”
