Guest Post: Courtesy of Melissa Griffiths shares Wingfeather Saga
The Wingfeather Saga written by Andrew Peterson is one that everyone in my family of seven fell in love with. If you are looking for a beautifully written story that captures the attention of kids and parents alike, this book series is for you.
This engrossing tale follows 3 siblings on their many adventures together. Janner, Tink, and Leeli find out the truth about their past, fight the Fangs of Dang, sing with sea dragons, face toothy cows, and grow into who the Maker made them to be. The characters are real and relatable while encouraging the reader to examine where their own heart lies.
The relationship between the siblings is so wonderfully relatable. They sometimes get upset with each other, they examine their feelings often, and they show up for each other even when it’s hard. Over and over again they choose their family, help each other, and have real emotions when challenges are hard, scary, or overwhelming.
These books kept my 12 and 14 year old reading into the night and they really wanted the whole family to know the story, and so I read them aloud to everyone. It is an excellent read aloud for the entire family and I’m so glad that we did. My kids compared their love of The Wingfeather Saga to that of Harry Potter; now that’s saying something for a die-hard Potter fans. And because we are so into the series we got the audiobooks as well. They are read by the author and he does an excellent job. The writing is absolutely beautiful and brought tears to my eyes many times. You are transported into the world inside the book and can see it unfolding through carefully chosen words and gorgeous alliteration.
So whether your kids are reading these on their own, the whole family is being read to, or you go for the audiobook version, you are going to be so glad that you started. We cheered, we cried, we stayed up way too late lots of nights in a row because we just had to keep reading. My kids are still talking about the books, examining difficult ideas and themes because of them (I love books that make you think), and are already excited to read them again. I’m looking forward to it too.
