Age Range: 10 and up (Grades 5 and up; children with parental supervision)
This activity page is from the real-life Museum of Mathematics in New York. The museum is dedicated to “revealing the wonders of mathematics” to the general public through exhibits and activities that stimulate inquiry and spark curiosity.
The museum also sells products, but you don’t have to purchase a thing to explore the activities.
When you get to the site, you’ll see a menu of activities and puzzles including:

Today, we celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., who was born January 15, 1929.
King was an African-American minister who led massive, peaceful demonstrations leading to the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. He believed in equality for people of all races, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his peaceful efforts to bring an end to racial discrimination in the United States.
This site has an excellent selection of free worksheets, BUT in order to get everything on the site, a paid membership is required. There are loads of resources that are free to use without a membership – you just need to poke around to locate them.

Then check out the left side bar for all the topics in math. Click on any topic and a new page opens with an extensive menu of printable worksheets to choose from on that topic for a wide range of ability levels. Look for the word “Free” highlighted in yellow to find the worksheets that are available without membership/registration.
When you’re done with math, you can explore the assortment of reading, spelling, grammar, writing, and social sciences worksheets as well. Again, look for the word “Free” (highlighted in yellow) to print/download worksheets free of charge. Plus you’ll find a Teacher Helpers section with free printable award certificates, sticker charts, and more.
This is a commercial website that sells books of worksheets and other teaching tools, but you don’t have to purchase a thing to access the hundreds of free resources.

Ellen McHenry’s Basement Workshop
Age Range: 5-16 (Grades 1-11 approximately and varies by topic and activity; with parental supervision)
This website provides free downloadable games and curricula for a wide range of subjects to be used offline.
The free math games and activities teach various math strands and concepts in a fun, hands-on way. The game instructions and materials can be printed out and assembled for play offline. The games were designed by a homeschool mom and illustrator named Ellen McHenry. When she couldn’t find resources that were really what she wanted and needed, she got out her old college texts (she majored in drawing and minored in math), did some review, and started inventing her own stuff, much of which she makes available on her site for free.
When you get to the site you’ll see a menu of the math games and activities that include:
Storm the Castle! – Players (ages 5-9 or so) pretend to be medieval soldiers attacking a castle. They must cross a field and a bridge using math skills, find the difference between two numbers, find coordinates on a grid, and solve simple word problems.
Loot the Pirate Ship! – Players (ages 7-11 or so) use and practice multiples of numbers, prime numbers, and divisibility rules to capture ships and loot them.
Sheep Herding Math Strategy Game – This is a two-player game that is fun for all ages. One person plays the sheep, the other is the border collie in this classic strategy game that is similar to “Hares and Hounds.”
Professor Pig’s Magic Math (a mini-curricula) – Professor Pig teaches his students (ages 5-9 or so) to see patterns with numbers that will allow them to easily do addition without any memorization. There is review and practice built into the activities eliminating boring drill worksheets!
These games are not only great for elementary students, but are helpful to older students who struggle with math or need remedial work.
But that’s not all! Ms. McHenry has also created free educational games and lessons for students of all ages, in the following subjects:

What an ingenious idea! This website, created by Laura Overdeck, provides a free, daily, Bedtime Math Problem that helps parents give kids a fun opportunity “to do math in their heads, so someday when they’re shopping and everything’s 20% off, they can figure out the sale price before the store closes.”
As explained at the website, the Bedtime Math Problem aims to be “fun and lively, but they won’t keep your kids from falling asleep. In our experience, math can get kids to sit still, focus, and quiet down.”
You can get your free, daily Bedtime Math Problem directly from the website, harvest it from their Facebook page, or you can subscribe to the daily newsletter that delivers it to your email inbox. (See details at the website.) Each BMP offers three levels of challenge to be used as a rough guideline:
Wee Ones for preschool kids
Little Kids for children in grades K-2
Big Kids for children in grades 3 and up
This is not a math curriculum, and there’s no one right way to use it. It’s simply a fun idea to help parents and kids enjoy math in small daily doses.
When you get to the website, you’ll see the most recent Bedtime Math Problems posted on the home page. When we visited, there were fun math problems themed around:
Hot Cocoa and Marshmallows
Words That Make You Cross-eyed
Snowballs in Siberia
Owls
And many more!
Each math story-problem is presented in a fun way that incorporates a little science and history and a lot of humor. They are designed to engage children’s interest immediately. All of the BMPs are archived at the website. You can check out their apps as well.

What an incredible resource for developing basic math skills from counting to geometry!
This site has page after page of information on every math strand and includes explanations of math processes, interactive online drill and practice work that you can tweak to create random math problems, and challenge games to keep your students on their toes.
When you get to the site you can click on a grade level from the top menu or a math topic from the left side bar menu. If you click on a grade level you will find a menu of math problems and activities that are typically taught at that grade level. If you click on a math topic you will find lessons, drills, games, and activities along with websites to teach and reinforce learning for that particular math strand.
This is really an incredible resource that you’ll want to bookmark and visit many times.
