It’s Monday, July 22, 2019, and time for Math in our Homeschooling Classroom and I would like to ask you to check out the following Recommended Websites: Hummingbird Math Age Range: 5-18 (Grades K-12, with parental supervision) This website was designed to be a cross-disciplinary opportunity for students in grades K-12 to study the behavior and distribution of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. These little birds tolerate people well and are drawn to gardens and feeders where they can easily be studied. The data collected is shared via the website with students worldwide. You can access a great deal of information at this site for free, but they also offer the opportunity to register for $20/year, a fee that enables students to participate fully in the research project. (Details are at the site.) However, you don’t have to register to learn interesting facts about a variety of hummingbirds or to access the activities and lesson ideas in math, art, geography, drama, music, and writing. When you get to the site you will see the introduction to “Hummingbird Mathematics Activities.” Just scroll down to review the lesson and click on the links to the other curriculum pages as well. |
Homeschool Skedtrak Age Range: 4-18 (Designed for homeschool parents to track activities for grades Pre-K-12) While we usually stick to recommending sites that enhance learning about math on Monday, we couldn’t resist sharing this free resource, developed by a homeschool family, that enables you to track your homeschool course of study and activities for free. I know that keeping records is a big concern to many homeschool parents, especially once the kids hit the high school years and need to create transcripts for college. While this site is designed with homeschool parents in mind, older students can use it for record-keeping purposes. Even unschoolers can use this system to track learning opportunities and interests they have explored as well. The description provided at the Homeschool Skedtrack website explains it all: “Homeschool Skedtrack is a *FREE* online lesson planner, scheduler, and tracking system rolled into one. The heart of the system is the automated scheduling of activities that frees you from the headache of rescheduling everything once an activity/lesson is missed.” Features include: easy record keeping from Pre-K-12 for each student worry free data back-upflexible scheduling of your child’s activities/lessons per year, per month, per week or as you go automated tracking of total number of hours/days completed scheduling and tracking of field trips each school calendar for each student, tests recording, automated grade calculation report card generation in pdf form at transcript generation in pdf format (two columns or by subject) There are even video tutorials at the site to explain how to use the Homeschool Skedtrack program. Begin by creating an account in the upper right corner of the home page. Not only that, this site offers a database of educational websites (many that have been recommended by ClickSchooling over the years). Not only does the database include websites on various subject topics such as math, science, music, homeschool resources, etc., it allows the users/visitors to rate the sites which can be helpful in determining overall usefulness. Bookmark this one to return often! |
