June 14 National Flag Day #NationalFlagDay

The Mommies Reviews

I thought I would remind you today is June 14th National Flag Day #NationalFlagDay, I always wanted a Flag and a Flag Pole for our yard but when we lived in our Motor Home David was afraid the kids would mess up our Flag so we didn’t get one. Then the other dad we was in Ollies and David let me know after all these years he would like a Flag and he surprised me when he purchased a Flag for my front porch. I had thought of hanging the flag up this morning but I want to wait until David is home so we can hang it up as a family. Your welcome to join us and I will serve refreshments for us.

Did you know America’s Flag Day marks the Second Continental Congress’s adoption of the first U.S. National Flag on June 14th, 1777.  The first flag featured the same 13 red and white stripes we see today.  However, the number and arrangement of stars have changed as the number of states has increased over the Centuries. The current flag has remained the same since 1960. Will we ever go from 50 to 51? If you have the opportunity you should google for a look at some possible Statehood candidates.

FLAG DAY ACTIVITIES

  1. The stars and stripes aren’t just for flags anymore. Take the opportunity on Flag Day to sport the red, white, and blue on socks, bathing suits, and hairstyles because today is a perfect day to celebrate your patriotism with a fun twist.
  2. An American flag trivia game is a quick and easy way to learn a few tidbits abut the flag. Most people may know that each star represents a State, but do they know that a new Star only appears on July 4th following a State’s admission to the Union? I didn’t and neither did Charlie or David. How about you?
  3. Strawberries, Blueberries, Marshmallows, are some of our favorite Fruits lending themselves to Flag-themed cakes, although we all know Marshmallows aren’t a Fruit, although Marshmallows are basically a Summer necessity, so let it slide.

AMERICAN FLAGS — BY THE NUMBERS

  1. We’ve been at 50 for nearly 60 years although there is possible candidates for the 51st Star including Puerto Rico, Guam, and Washington, DC. Which State do you think should be added and why? My family thinks it should be Washington DC. which we thought was a Star already but this tells you your never to old to learn new things.
  2. There’s just so much luck in this flag, that we need to thank Alaska (January 1959) for joining us. This one had a short reign. Hawaii (August 1959) would soon make it 50.
  3. It featured such beautiful symmetry with the addition of New Mexico and Arizona in 1912 and flew proudly for 47 years.
  4. The number 31 doesn’t easily lend itself to neat patterns. If we didn’t actually love California (added in 1850) so much, we’d probably have made it secede after seeing the lack of symmetry. (This flag lasted seven years!)
  5. 13 is America’s original flag, and it’s the only one that dared defy the straight line pattern of all its successors. If you ask us, the 13 stars in a circle better represent the unity of the, Union.

WHY PEOPLE LOVE FLAG DAY

  1. It’s easy to get so caught up in our day-to-day lives that we sometimes forget to be thankful for the bigger picture. Flag Day reminds us that we are one Country — united — despite our disagreements.
  2. Americans love to have parades for many events and holidays. Mid-June is the perfect time to set up that camping chair on the street corner and watch the local firefighters, school bands and dance troupes strut their stuff.
  3. The weather is starting to behave, kids are wrapping up school, and BBQ season is upon us. Flag Day gives us another reason to celebrate outside and enjoy the Sunshine.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
