July 29th is National Chicken Wing Day #NationalChickenWingDay which David and Charlie love. David has been wanting to make Chicken Wings or Buffalo Chicken Wings at home which we’ve never done. Although, our old neighbor Roma always made them and would bring some to share with David and Charlie.

Being David’s Birthday week I have the Air Fryer and was thinking I might try and surprise David and Charlie with Chicken Wings for dinner this evening. Would you like to join us/ Even though Charlie isn’t #homeschooling now it doesn’t mean he shouldn’t still learn to cook. I was thinking about getting Charlie to help me make the Chicken Wings and if David is home he can help and turning dinner into #familytime

. Do you make Chicken Wings at home? If so come and share your recipe with us and let me know what sauce you use. Or you can use the recipe I shared with you below. The sky’s the limit when it comes to Chicken Wings and yes, you can purchase Wings at your favorite restaurant or the store as long as you celebrate National Wing Day.

Waterfalls of Ranch dressing? Check. Gobs of Blue Cheese? Check. Napkins? Check. An insatiable hunger for the ultimate party food, complete with a willingness to eat far beyond your comfort level? Definitely! Well then, you’re ready to take on National Chicken Wing Day on July 29th. Don’t forget the full bottle of antacids.

Originally relegated to the far corners of the kitchen as material for Chicken Stock, Chicken Wings were born when the owners of the Anchor Bar in Buffalo cooked up a midnight snack for their son and his friends. Using only Fried Wings, Butter, and Hot Sauce, they stumbled on a dish that would change American game day gastronomy forever. July 29th, make Chicken Wings sweet, spicy or any way you want, but raise a glass and down a few Chicken Wings to celebrate National Wing Day. We can thank previous Buffalo Mayor, Stan Makowski, for giving us one of the most celebrated food holidays of the Summer.

National Wing Day Activities

  1. Your job today is to free Wings. You read right, free Chicken Wings. In many locations around the Country, Bars and Restaurants will offer free Chicken Wings to customers who make some kind of purchase which could be a drink or an entree. Don’t let this deal fly away.
  2. Invite your friends to try out their creative side by cooking up a Chicken Wing dish other than Buffalo. Create a list for everyone to fill in so there are no doubles, then chow down as you try an assortment of out-there, oddball, yet tasty Wings.
  3. Have you been passing by that Bar for years? The one that advertises its annual Chicken Wing eating competition? have you ever thought about joining the contest? Do it! Maybe you’ll earn yourself a spot on their Wall of Fame, or at the very least, go down in a blaze of glory.

Why People Love National Wing Day

  1. We all know Chicken is a great source of lean protein, it’s nice to know that the white meat is also packed with other health benefits. Its high levels of vitamin B can boost immunity and regulate digestion, while Chicken has much lower levels of saturated fats and cholesterols than red meats. Just take it easy on the Buffalo Sauce and you’ll be fine.
  2. Whether it’s an official competition at a Fair or just some friends getting together, these bite-size Chicken chunks are perfect for chowing down. Sometimes it’s a matter of handling the high heat of Spicy Buffalo Sauce, while other times it just means eating the most Chicken Wings in a given period. Either way, excitement, and maybe a few stomachaches, will ensue.
  3. Bars have had Chicken Wings on their menus for decades for a reason. There are few things more satisfying than a late night basket. Sweet, spicy, salty, juicy, and crunchy Chicken Wings have got it all. When you only need a snack to tide you over till morning, it’s an easy decision to make.

Recipe Chicken Wings

Equipment

  • 4 pounds chicken wings , halved at joints, wingtips discarded
  • ▢2 Tablespoons baking powder* , aluminum free
  • ▢3/4 teaspoon salt
  • ▢1/2 teaspoon cracker black pepper
  • ▢1 teaspoon paprika
  • ▢1 teaspoon garlic powder

Buffalo sauce:

Instructions

  • Adjust your oven rack to the upper-middle position. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  • Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire rack (I use a cooling rack) on top. Spray the rack with non-stick spray.
  • Use paper towels to pat the wings dry and place them in a large bowl. It’s important to dry them REALLY well!
  • Combine the salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and baking powder in a small bowl. Then sprinkle the seasoning over the wings, tossing to evenly coat.
  • Arrange wings, skin side up, in single layer on prepared wire rack.
  • Bake on the upper middle oven rack, turning every 20 minutes until wings are crispy and browned. The total cook time will depend on the size of the wings but may take up to 1 hour.
  • Remove from oven and let stand for 5 minutes. Transfer wings to bowl and toss with sauce.

For Buffalo sauce:

  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat stir together all sauce ingredients. Mix well until sugar has dissolved.
  • Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature before adding to wings (or prepare the sauce ahead of time and refrigerate).

Notes

Baking Powder: You MUST use aluminum-free baking POWDER (not baking soda) for this recipe.
