Did you know January 24th is National Peanut Butter Day #NationalPeanutButterDay? There are certain foods all of us have in our home that are staples. In my home it’s #PeanutButter and all type of #Cheese. What is a staple in your home and why?
The question today should be Jif or Peter Pan and why? How about Skippy or is there another brand of Peanut Butter you like and why? Creamy or Crunchy Peanut Butter and why? Then the next question is Bread one or two slices or Crackers and why?
For me personally I love Crunchy Peanut Butter but it gets into my teeth so now I use Creamy which my dad said wasn’t Peanut Butter. One slice of Bread folded over please for a Fold Over Sandwich but sometimes Crackers are okay because Charlie will eat Ritz Crackers and Peanut Butter with me. No, Club Crackers Charlie said. Ol- fashion Saltine Crackers are good and a nod to my childhood.
As for the brand if you were to ask Suzzane it needed to be Peter Pan and only Peter Pan. I switch between Peter Pan and Jiff depending on the price and sometime I get Skippy because David likes it. Do you?
For Charlie the only way he will eat Peanut Butter is if I get Goober which has Peanut Butter and Jelly mixed. Did you know when Marcellus Gilmore Edson first patented Peanut Butter in 1884, he probably didn’t realize his concoction would become a taste sensation that would sweep the Nation. Whether you go crunchy or smooth, on January 24th we put down our cell phones and pick up our spreading knives to celebrate National Peanut Butter Day.
The first recipe for a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich was written by Julia Davis Chandler for the Boston Cooking School Magazine of Culinary Science and Domestic Economics. Did you know in 1904 Peanut Butter was introduced at the St. Louis World’s Fair?
National Peanut Butter Day Activities
- I thought I would create a fun challenge, for all of us today. Let’s see if we can eat Peanut Butter in every meal today. Start with Peanut Butter on a Bagel or Toast in the morning. For lunch let’s have a Peanut Butter based Dressing for your lunchtime Salad. For dinner lets have a Thai Peanut Curry which often uses peanut Butter as an ingredient for dinner! Don’t forget dessert of Peanut Butter Cookies or Recess Peanut Butter Cups.
- We all know there are parties for foods like Pizza, but why not have some nostalgia for that smooth or crunchy food you had growing up? Host a Peanut Butter tasting party and all the recipes must include Peanut Butter which makes a great party for the kids, too!

Recipe for Homemade Peanut Butter Cups
Ingredients
Flaky sea salt, for garnish
1 cup creamy peanut butter
6 Tbsp. unsalted butter, softened
2 cups powdered sugar
3/4 cup graham cracker crumbs
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. kosher salt
8 3.5-oz. bars dark (70% cocoa) chocolate, chopped
Directions
- Line two baking sheets with 48 regular-size paper muffin liners or 96 mini paper muffin liners; set aside.
- Beat the peanut butter and butter on medium in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes. With the mixer on low, gradually stir in the powdered sugar, graham cracker crumbs, vanilla extract and salt. Beat until well combined, about 1 minute.
- Divide the peanut butter mixture into 1 1/2 teaspoon balls for regular size peanut butter cups or 1/2 teaspoon balls for mini cups. Flatten into about 1 1/2-inch wide discs for regular size or 1-inch wide discs for mini cups. Place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and chill while melting the chocolate.
- Fill the bottom of a medium saucepan with about 1 inch of water and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Place chopped chocolate in a dry, heatproof glass or ceramic bowl that is slightly larger than the saucepan. The bowl should sit on top of the pan without its bottom touching the water.
- Reduce the heat to medium-low. Place the bowl of chocolate over the saucepan of water. Heat the chocolate, stirring occasionally with a dry rubber spatula, until chocolate is mostly smooth and melted, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove the bowl from the saucepan and continue stirring until the residual heat melts the remaining chocolate and mixture is smooth (return bowl to saucepan, if needed).
- Spoon about 2 teaspoons of chocolate into the bottom of each regular muffin cup or about 1 teaspoon chocolate into the bottom of each mini muffin cup. Gently press 1 peanut butter disc into each muffin cup, allowing the chocolate to come up around the sides. Spoon chocolate on top of peanut butter to cover, about 2 teaspoons for regular muffin cups or 1 teaspoon for mini muffin cups.
- Sprinkle the top of each peanut butter cup with flaky sea salt, if desired. Chill peanut butter cups until chocolate is set, about 1 hour.
