I wanted to share a fun Holiday with you which takes place on January 12th of every year Internationa Kiss A Ginger Day #internationalkissaginferday. It’s funny growing up one of my best friends Marla had beautiful red hear but I don’t ever remember her being called a Ginger or even hearing that term.
Infact its just been the last couple years that I learned about red heads being referred to as a Ginger. How about you do you know what a Ginger is and when did you learn about it? I can’t say Charlie, David or I know of a red head to celebrate today. Do you know of one? Unless you want to celebrate Reba McIntire once of Charlie’s favorite singers or Lucille Ball Suzzane’s favorite actress from I Love Lucy. Although she isn’t a true red head so she shouldn’t count today should she?
Kiss A Ginger Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated all over the world today. The purpose of Kiss A Ginger Day is to show that red head in your life how much you care by giving them a kiss. International Kiss A Ginger is a holiday that’s only been celebrated since 2009. Which isn’t surprising considering 2% of the world’s population has natural red hair.
Know I have a question for you. Did you know one of the most common assumptions made by people is red hair originated in either Scotland or Ireland. I believe most people would be surprised to learn red hair didn’t occur in any of those Countries. Instead, it is believed that red hair originally began in Central Asia. Can you imagine that?
Kiss A Ginger Day was started by Derek Forgie as a positive celebration of people with red hair as an antidote against bullying and prejudice that redheads often encounter.
Redhead Facts
- Scotland has the highest concentration of redheads @ 13%
- Ireland has the second highest concentration of redheads @ 10%
- Blue-eyed gingers only make-up less than 1% of the world population
- Bees are most likely to sting redheads,
- Redheads have a higher chance of being left-handed
If you are a ginger yourself, then feel free to treat yourself to a nice treat. If you know a ginger, then kiss them just be sure to get their permission first! The holiday can be used as a way to dispel many of the harmful myths and stereotypes that surround people with red hair.
