Homeschooling with Board Games: Rummikub

This week in #HomeschoolWithBoardGames Charlie picked out Rummikub from Goliath Games for us to play in not only our Homeschool With Board Games but #FamilyGameNight.

Rummikub:

Rummikub by Pressman

Ages 8 and up, 2-4 players

It’s really no surprise that Rummikub is so popular – it has all the elements that make a great game: it’s easy to learn and fast moving, it’s different every time it’s played, it combines luck and strategy, and it changes quickly so every player has a chance to win until the very end.

Players take turns placing numbered tiles in runs and groups, rummy style. The ‘board’ continually changes as players adjust the tiles on the table. Be the first player to play every tile on your rack to win.

  • With more than 55 million units sold, Rummikub is one of the most-played games worldwide!
  • Ideal for people of different ages to play together, making it a great family game
  • Reinforces STEM skills like sequencing and pattern recognition

In our Homeschool Rummikub reinforces STEM which is a resource children of all ages should learn. For little ones they can read the numbers on the tiles for you.

The little kids can tell you the colors the see. and then they can helpyou put the tiles in order. For additional learning you can have them put the tiles in order from largest to smallest. How about smallest to largest? Or use the tiles to learn skip counting.

Charlie and I even used the tiles to create Math Problems and we would ask someone the answer if they got the answer right we moved on to the next person. If not they had to do another math problem.

Spelling Class:

Rummikub, Brings People Together, Countries, Millions Sold, Pressman, Players, Tiles, Already, Play, Runs of the Same Color, Pull Apart Runs and Sets, Add, Change, Instantly, Multiple Rounds, Keep Score, Collecting Points, Games of All Time, Elements, Fast-Moving, Different, Combines, Luck

Reading Class:

Have your student set up the Board Game and ask them to read the instructions out loud. Once they finish ask them questions to make sure they understand what is going to happen.

I had Charlie read the instructions and set the Game up then I could make sure he was following directions. As Charlie set the game up I asked questions to make sure he was comprehending what he was reading.

Cooking Class:

Create a recipe based on the Game that can be served while playing the Game.

Write the recipe inside your Math Journal which will be turned into a Cookbook at the end of the year.

Charlie and I created Cookies in the shape of the tiles and we designed the cookies with the shapes on the Tiles. Charlie enjoyed creating the Joker.

Art Class:

Create a piece of Art based on the Game and write a description of what you drew inside your Art Journal.

Charlie drew what happened in the Game as we played. Including his dad and how much he was laughing at Charlie and I as we teamed -up to win.

Once we went over everything I wanted to teach Charlie using Rummikub we sat down to play and we had so much fun. Time flew by and before we knew it Charlie’s friend came over looking for Charlie.

Charlie had Bradley join us in a Game. Bradley had so much fun he didn’t want to quit playing. Before Bradley left he took a picture of the Game and the website so he could ask his mom to pick up Rummikub for there family to play.

David asked me if I thought my niece Lily who is 5 and my nephew Jason who is 7 could play and would understand what they were doing. I told David Rummikub would be the perfect Game to get them for there Birthday.

Thank you,

Glenda, Charlie and David Cates
